'Homebrew' Tropical Storm Threatens NYC With Soaking Rain: Forecasters

A developing tropical threat along the coast could bring heavy rain and gusty winds to the city this weekend, said AccuWeather forecasters.

NEW YORK CITY — A close-to-home tropical threat could soak New York City this weekend, forecasters warned.

A tropical depression or full-fledged tropical storm could form along the East Coast from Friday to Saturday, said forecasters with the National Weather Service and AccuWeather.

The culprits are a stalled front along the coast with a low-pressure area, AccuWeather explained.

"Stalled fronts along the southeastern coast of the United States are one way a 'homebrew' tropical system can form," said Bernie Rayno, AccuWeather's chief on-air meteorologist, in the outlet's report.

The system has a "medium" chance of developing into a tropical depression or storm, according to AccuWeather.

But forecasters said New Yorkers could still anticipate a wet weekend.

"Soaking rain on tap even if a named storm doesn't form," read the AccuWeather report.
