Hundreds Protest At LaGuardia As Immigrant Kids Arrive

Protesters took to the airport to show solidarity with kids torn from their families.

QUEENS, NY — Hundreds of protesters descended on LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday night as more immigrant kids separated from their families reportedly landed in New York. Crowds stood with posters to welcome children brought from the southern border under the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" immigration policy, photos and videos from the scene show.

"We’re here to show the Trump administration that these kids are not alone," activist Antonio Alarcon said, according to a tweet. "They have a community!"

Activists posted video online purporting to show immigrant kids arriving from Texas even after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to end the policy of separating families caught crossing into the U.S.

Cristina Jimenez from United We Dream told the New York Post that she saw some children arrive around 9:30 p.m. Hundreds of kids have been sent to New York City from the southern border as a result of the federal policy, which has drawn widespread condemnation.

"I saw a few of them coming out with plastic bags,” Jimenez told the Post. "What I saw just broke my heart. They looked terrified."

Protesters stationed themselves at three airport terminals and waited for kids to emerge. They stayed into the early hours of Thursday morning, at times singing and chanting, "I belive that we will win!"

Among the protesters were City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer and Women's March co-founder Linda Sarsour.

"It’s devastating that we are in this moment. But this crowd represents the decency of who we are," Van Bramer, a Queens Democrat, wrote on Twitter.

The NYPD did not report any arrests stemming from the protests. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey did not respond to a request for comment Thursday morning.
