Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- A fifth and final subject has been arrested in connection to a string of drug-fueled deaths and robberies targeting gay men, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell announced on Tuesday. "While the many victims in this case are part of the LGBTQIA+ community, the motive was robbery, the motive was for monetary gain," Sewell said. (New York City Patch)
- At least five people were injured, and one person was killed when a parking lot collapsed near City Hall yesterday afternoon. A social media video shows a row of cars on buckling concrete. Firefighters had to be pulled from the scene due to concerns over the building's stability — they later used a drone and robotic dog to help with search efforts. (New York City Patch)
- Over 50,000 students applied for Summer Rising, a popular free summer education program offered by the city, on the first day applications were open. There's a total of 110,000 slots available, and unlike last year it's not on a first come, first serve basis. (Spectrum News NY1)
- New York City and local nonprofits are receiving $60 million in grants from the federal government to address homelessness, in addition to over 600 NYCHA housing choice vouchers. (AMNY)
- Glass is breaking, and the MTA apparently doesn't know what to do about it. There have been at least 2,000 instances of subway windows and platform liquid-crystal displays being shattered since August 2020, according to MTA statistics, but the transit agency isn't saying how much it is spending to fix then.
