Luigi Mangione Could Waive Extradition To NYC Next Week

NEW YORK CITY — Luigi Mangione may waive extradition to New York City as early as next Tuesday, the Manhattan District Attorney disclosed Friday.

"Indications are that the defendant may waive, but that waiver is not complete until a court proceeding,"Alvin Bragg said at a press conference Friday afternoon.

The earliest a court proceeding could be scheduled in Pennsylvania is Tuesday, Bragg said.

The 26-year-old suspect remains detained at Huntingdon State Correctional Institution in Pennsylvania, according to the New York Times.

Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks told reporters that the New York case should take "priority" over the charges Mangione faces in Pennsylvania, Patch previously reported.

“We do not intend to delay this defendant’s extradition to New York and we certainly — we’ve indicated to New York, their prosecution should take precedence, and then ours will follow," Weeks said.

Mangione's lawyers have indicated that they are fighting extradition to New York City after he was denied bail by a Pennsylvania judge on Tuesday.

"We are going to continue to press forward on parallel paths. We will be ready, whether he is going to waive extradition or whether he is going to contest extradition," Bragg added.

Mangione faces five charges in Pennsylvania in connection to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan.
