Mail Bomb Suspect Appears In NY Court, Held Without Bail: Reports

Cesar Sayoc, the Brooklyn native accused of mailing bombs to Democrat officials and supporters, will be held without bail.

NEW YORK, NY — Accused mail bomber Cesar Sayoc made his first appearance in New York City federal court Tuesday since being hit with charges for five federal crimes, according to reports.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert Lehrburger ruled that 56-year-old Sayoc will be held without bail, the Associated Press reported. Sayoc's lawyers did not request his release on bail and federal prosecutor Jane Kim called the accused mail bomber "a serious risk of danger to the public and a flight risk," according to the AP.

Sayoc was arrested on Oct. 26 in Plantation, Florida and was indicted on charges of transporting explosives across state lines, sending explosives in the mail, threatening interstate communications, assaulting federal officials and threatening a former president of the United States. The accused domestic terrorist was transferred to New York City because he is indicted in the Southern District of New York.

The Brookyln native who worked as a road manager for male strip shows is facing a potential sentence of 58 years in federal prison, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in October.

Sayoc caused panic throughout the United States by sending packages containing unsophisticated explosive devices resembling pipe bombs to high-ranking Democrat officials, liberal campaign donors and news organizations, federal prosecutors said. Packages were received by people such as Hillary and Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama, billionaire political donor George Soros and actor Robert De Niro, prosecutors said.

CNN also received two packages containing devices at its New York City and Atlanta offices, federal prosecutors said. The Time Warner Center in Columbus Circle was evacuated when a package meant for CNN was discovered in the building's mail room.

Sayoc is expected to make another preliminary court appearance on Monday, the Associated Press reported.
