Man Arrested For Setting NYC Subway Rider On Fire, Police Say

NEW YORK CITY — An 18-year-old has been arrested after he set a subway rider’s pants aboard a Manhattan subway train on Monday.

Hiram Carrero, 18, was arrested on Thursday in the East Village and has been charged with attempted murder, assault, arson, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.

According to police, Carrero boarded a northbound No. 3 train in the 34th Street subway station around 3:05 a.m. and set a 56-year-old man's pants on fire. The victim was sleeping when the attack occured.

The victim was found on the 42nd Street station platform with severe burns to his legs. He was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center for treatment.

Police released surveillance images of the suspect after the incident.

Carrero is expected to be arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court. Defense attorney information for the suspect was not readily available.
