Martin Luther King Day 2023 In NYC: What's Open, Closed & Events

NEW YORK CITY — New Yorkers don't need to treat Martin Luther King Jr. Day as if it's a normal holiday in 2023.

Many in the city plan to honor the late civil rights activist by turning their off into a day of service.

Events where New Yorkers can take action or otherwise mark the holiday are all over the five boroughs, but here are a few highlights.

Hunger Free America is running volunteer events all over the city as part of their 2023 MLK-Serve-A-Thon.

"For years we have honored MLK's life work with service and action," the event's site states. "We have a wide variety of meaningful opportunities to serve, both in person and virtually, through volunteer events, panels, and workshops."

Between Thursday and MLK Day itself, there are events from building a compost system in Bushwick to packaging hygiene kits in Harlem to all-encompassing days of service. Click here to see a list of volunteer opportunities.

MLK Day is a holiday for many businesses and institutions across the city.

And, as such, here's what's open and closed.

Government Buildings

• New York City public schools will be closed.
• City, state and federal government buildings, including post offices, will be closed.
• Mail will not be delivered.
• Many banks likely will be closed, as Monday is a U.S. Federal Reserve holiday.
• Libraries will be closed.

Trash collection

• There will be no trash, composting or recycling collection on Monday. Residents who normally receive collection service that day may place their material at the curb between 4 p.m. and midnight Monday evening for collection starting Tuesday.

Alternate Side Parking

• Alternate Side Parking is suspended Monday.
