New Yorkers Pay Higher Taxes Than Any Other State, Study Finds
The Empire State has the biggest tax burden in the nation.

NEW YORK, NY — Uncle Sam will take some of most Americans' income by next week's April 17 tax filing deadline. But each state takes a cut, too — and New York's is bigger than any other, according to a WalletHub study published Monday.
Some 13.04 percent of each New Yorker's income goes to property, income, sales and excise taxes, the personal finance website's analysis of U.S. Tax Policy Center data shows. That's the biggest tax burden in the nation, outpacing No. 2, Hawaii, by nearly 1.5 percentage points.
Some 4.78 percent of New Yorkers' earnings go to individual income taxes, WalletHub found. That figure — the highest in the nation — represents the biggest chunk of the state's total tax burden.

Property taxes aren't far behind — they take 4.62 percent of residents' income, the sixth-highest percentage in the nation. New Yorkers pay 3.64 percent of their earnings toward sales and excise taxes, a burden that ranks 22nd among the states.
Hawaii takes 11.57 percent of its residents' income, ranking the Aloha State's tax burden just behind New York's. Maine (11.02 percent), Vermont (10.94 percent) and Minnesota (10.37 percent) round out the top five.
