New Yorkers Work Longer Than Anyone Else, Study Finds

The late hours weren't enough to make New York America's hardest-working city.

NEW YORK, NY — If you find yourself in the office late into the evening, you're not alone. New Yorkers work more hours every week than any other city in the country, according to a new WalletHub study published Monday.

The average New York City employee works 40.3 hours a week, the longest average work week of 116 cities the personal finance website reviewed. But the late hours weren't enough to make the Big Apple the "hardest-working" city in the United States — San Francisco takes that honor, while New York ranks fifth in the nation.

WalletHub used data from the U.S. government, nonprofit groups and Gallup polls to rank the nation's big cities based on nine work-related factors, including the length of the average work week, average commute time, employment rate and others.

At No. 5 on the list, New York ranked below two East Coast rivals — Jersey City, New Jersey, the home of many commuters to New York City, ranked third, and Washington, D.C. ranked fourth. Second place went to Fremont, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area.

New York's struggling transit system can make commutes here seem worse than anywhere else. But it takes longer to get to work in 24 other cities, WalletHub found. The average New Yorker spends 39.1 minutes on each trip to work, the 25th-longest commute in the nation.

More than half the city's workers — 53 percent — leave vacation time unused each year, putting New York in the 29th spot in that category.

New Yorkers also do plenty of work for others. City residents spend 38.8 hours volunteering every year, the seventh-highest amount of time in the nation, WalletHub found.
