NYC Crime Drops In 2023, Despite 'Explosion Of Youth Violence': NYPD
Youth crime is on the rise, even as murders and gun violence continue to fall, police officials said.

NEW YORK CITY — Don't believe Marjorie Taylor Greene — crime keeps falling in New York City during 2023, according to new NYPD data.
Major crimes are down in five of seven felony categories so far this year, said NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell Thursday.
Murder, rape, robbery, burglary and grand larceny all fell, she said.

Gun violence in particular took a dip, with shooting incidents falling 23 percent so far this year and shooting victims down 17 percent, she said.
"These are significant tangible steps toward our very clear objective: end gun violence and hold offenders and save lives," she said.

But crimes aren't falling among one precious group: the city's youths, Sewell said.
The city has seen an increase in youth crime and people who are under 18 who are victims of violence, she said.
The numbers were vividly shared by Michael Lipetri, the NYPD's chief of crime control strategies.
Lipetri said a quarter of robbery arrests this year were of people under the age of 18.
Youths accounted for 12 percent of shooting victims so far in 2023, compared to 10 percent last year, he said.
"Just to kind of show you the explosion of youth violence, this year we've had already incidents where under the age of 18 victims have already been shot two separate times," he said.
