- A gas explosion in the South Brooklyn neighborhood of Bath Beach left six people displaced and none injured. The unexpected explosion, which occurred in the morning in an unoccupied building, is the second one to hit the city in the past month. (New York City Patch)
- Overall crime rates in New York City rose by 39% percent compared to the first month of last year, leaving a difficult path ahead for Mayor Eric Adams who has made addressing public safety a central feature of his administration. The city saw 28 murders in January, down from 33 last year. However, there were a total of 100 shootings. (New York City Patch)
- Mayor Eric Adams hinted about one of the most controversial aspects of his blueprint to end gun violence, spot checks, in an interview. His plan is to potentially introduce TSA-style security measures at focal points, including bus terminals like the Port Authority, and even in the subways. - Tenants of a building owned and managed by the same landlord involved in the Twin Parks fire which killed 17 people, say they are given "no choice" but to use space heaters. Their building also suffered from an electrical fire last year, which remained contained within a single building. Both buildings are part of the city's middle-income Mitchell-Lama housing program. - West Village residents are planning a protest today against the city's plans to make restaurant sheds permanent. The "chuck the sheds" rally comes days before a City Council hearing on the issue. Residents claim that the sheds have led to unsanitary and in some cases dangerous conditions. (New York City Patch)
