NEW YORK CITY — A first-of-its-kind minimum pay rate soon could be served up to New York City's 60,000 app-based restaurant delivery workers.

Workers would make at least $23.82 per hour by 2025 under a new proposal by the city consumer and worker protection officials.

Delivery workers currently make $7.09 per hour on hour, excluding tips, officials said.

"This new proposed minimum pay rate would help ensure a fairer pay for delivery workers for third-party apps, providing more stability for 60,000 workers across our city," said Mayor Eric Adams in a statement.

The proposed rate would be finalized after a public hearing and consideration of comments from city dwellers, officials said.

It would start at $17.87 and increase to $23.82, adjusted for inflation, when fully phased in April 1, 2025, according to the city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.

Delivery workers would be paid by trip time, as well as time spent connected to an app waiting for an offer, officials said.
