See The NYC Hospitals That Rank Among The Nation's Best

A new list ranked the top 250 hospitals in the country.

NEW YORK – A New York City hospital has earned a spot among the nation's top 100 medical centers, meaning it's within the top 2 percent for care. A second facility placed in the top 250.

Lenox Hill Hospital, on East 77th St. on the Upper East Side, earned the top 100 placement on a list released Tuesday by Healthgrades.

Healthgrades said its analysis revealed that, on average, the hospitals on its list outperformed others in treating a core group of conditions that account for more than 80 percent of deaths in the areas evaluated.

The city had no hospitals in the nation's top 50, or highest performing 1 percent.

Lenox Hill was awarded “for exhibiting clinical excellence for five or more consecutive years,” Healthgrades said.

The top 250 hospitals are in the top 5 percent for overall clinic excellence and included NYU Langone Medical Center, on First Ave. in Kips Bay.

Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance for 32 procedures and conditions and in order to be eligible for the list, a hospital must have evaluations in at least 21 of the procedures and conditions.

After identifying eligible hospitals, Healthgrades has a series of steps it uses to compile the list of the top 250 hospitals. The procedures and conditions evaluated by Healthgrades include heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, respiratory failure, sepsis and stroke. (You can read the full methodology here.)
