NYC Labor Day 2018 Weekend Subway Service Changes

Heads up: The 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, J, M, N, Q and S trains won't be running normally this weekend.

NEW YORK, NY — Here's how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will screw up your plans this Labor Day weekend — from late Friday night, Aug. 31, through early Monday morning, Sept. 3 — in the name of "upgrading and maintaining our tracks, stations and signal systems in order to continue to provide our customers with safe and reliable service.

Getting around on the subway this weekend is going to be tough, as a staggering 19(!) train lines will be running with modified service. (For more New York City news delivered straight to your inbox sign up for Patch's free newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

1 train:

  • From 9:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sep. 4, free shuttle buses and/or 2/3 trains will replace 1 trains between 14 St and South Ferry due to station reconstruction at Cortlandt WTC. 1 service will operate between 242 St and 14 St (express between 42 St and 14 St, days/evenings). Free shuttle buses will run between Chambers St and South Ferry. Transfer between 1/2/3 at 42 St or 14 St, and between 2/3 at Chambers St.

2 train:

  • From 9:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3, free shuttle buses will replace 2 trains between 135 St and E 180 St due to switch work near 149 St-Grand Concourse, and track replacement between Freeman St and Simpson St, and between Intervale Av and Prospect Av. 2 trains will run in two sections: between Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College and the 148 St 3 line station, and between E 180 St and Wakefield-241 St. Free shuttle buses will run between 135 St and E 180 St. Transfer between trains and buses at 135 St and/or E 180 St.

2/3 train:

  • From 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2/3 trains run local in both directions between 34 St-Penn Station and Chambers St due to station reconstruction at Cortlandt WTC. Late night 3 service will run between Times Sq-42 St and 148 St.

3 train:

  • At all times until November 2018, 3 trains will skip 145 St in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. During this closure, 3 trains will run between New Lots Av and 96 St, and via the 1 to 137 St, the last stop. Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service between 148 St and 135 St. Transfer between 2/3 trains at 96 St and between 2 trains at 135 St.

4/6 trains:

  • At all times until December 2018, 4/6 trains will skip 28 St in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby 6 stations along Park Av South at 33 St or 23 St. Or, use the nearby 28 St R/W station. Local buses are also available along Lexington Av and Madison Av.

5 train:

  • From 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, and from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, free shuttle buses will replace 5 trains between 149 St-Grand Concourse and E 180 St due to switch work near 149 St-Grand Concourse, and track replacement between Freeman St and Simpson St, and between Intervale Av and Prospect Av. 5 trains will run in two sections: between Bowling Green and 149 St-Grand Concourse, and between E 180 St and Eastchester-Dyre Av. Free shuttle buses will run between 149 St and E 180 St. Transfer between trains and buses at 149 St-Grand Concourse and/or E 180 St.
  • From 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, and from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, 5 trains will run every 20 minutes between Bowling Green and 149 St-Grand Concourse due to switch work near 149 St-Grand Concourse, and track replacement between Freeman St and Simpson St, and between Intervale Av and Prospect Av.

7 train:

  • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3, Flushing-Main St bound 7 trains run express from Queensboro Plaza to Mets-Willets Point, stopping at 74 St-Broadway due to signal modernization. As an alternative, use a 34 St-Hudson Yards bound 7 to complete your trip. Transfer at Mets-Willets Point, Junction Blvd, 74 St-Broadway, or Queensboro Plaza.
  • From 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, Flushing-Main St bound 7 trains run express from Queensboro Plaza to Mets-Willets Point due to signal modernization. As an alternative, use a 34 St-Hudson Yards bound 7 train to complete your trip. Transfer at Mets-Willets Point, Junction Blvd, 61 St-Woodside, or Queensboro Plaza.

A/C trains:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, uptown A/C train will run express from 59 St-Columbus Circle to 125 St due to station enhancements at 86 St and 110 St. As an alternative, use a downtown A local, or C to complete your trip. Transfer at 125 St or 59 St-Columbus Circle Canal St. As a reminder, C trains do not run overnight.
  • At all times until September 2018, A and C trains skip 163 St-in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby 168 St A and C , 155 St A and C, or 157 St 1 instead. Use M3, M100 or M101 buses and transfer to the at 168 St or 155 St with MetroCard. Need to transfer to another bus? Ask the M3, M100 or M101 driver for a MetroCard Bus Transfer, which is valid on your next local bus ride within two hours. On your return trip, ask the station agent at 168 St or 155 St for a transfer to the bus.

A/S trains:

  • At all times until Monday, Sept. 3, A service will be suspended in both directions between Broad Channel and Far Rockaway-Mott Ave. due to a flood protection project in the Rockaways. During this closure, A service will operate between Inwood-207th St. and Broad Channel, and via the S to/from Rockaway Park-Beach 116th St. S shuttle trains will run between Rockaway Park-Beach 116th St. and Beach 90th St., and via the A to/from Far Rockaway-Mott Ave. For Far Rockaway/Mott Ave.-bound service take the S via transfer at Beach 90th St.

B train:

  • Beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, B service will end early due to signal modernization. As an alternative, B line customers should take the C/D and/or Q instead. As a reminder, B service does not run on weekends.

B/C trains:

  • At all times until late Oct. 2018, B/C trains will skip 72 St and 86 St in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project.
    • For service to/from 72 St, use nearby B/C stations at 81 St-Museum of Natural History and 59 St-Columbus Circle. Or take the 123 at, along Broadway. Use an M10 bus along Frederick Douglass Blvd and transfer to the B/C (A overnight) at 81 St or 59 St with MetroCard.
    • For service to/from 86 St, use nearby B/C stations at 81 St-Museum of Natural History and 96 St. Or take the 1 at 86 St, along Broadway. Use an M10 bus along Frederick Douglass Blvd and transfer to the B/C (A overnight) at 81 St or 96 St with MetroCard.

B/D train:

  • At all times until December 2018, B and D trains will skip 174-175 Sts in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. As an alternative, customers are advised to use the nearby Tremont Av or 170 St B/D stations. Use the Bx1 or Bx2 along Grand Concourse and transfer to B or D trains at Tremont Av or 170 St with a MetroCard. For either station, if you need to transfer to another bus, ask the driver for a MetroCard Bus Transfer which can be used on your next local bus ride within two hours. On your return trip, ask the station agent at the Tremont Av or 170 St stations for a transfer to the bus.
  • At all times until Jan. 2019, B/D trains will skip 167 St in both directions MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project. As an alternative, customers are advised to use the nearby stations at 170 St B/D, 167 St 4, or 161 St-Yankee Stadium 4/B/D. Use the Bx1 or Bx2 along Grand Concourse and transfer to the subway at 170 St or 161 St-Yankee Stadium with a MetroCard. Use the Bx35 along E 167 St and transfer to the 4 at 167 St station with a MetroCard. If you need to transfer to another bus, ask the bus operator for a MetroCard Bus Transfer which can be used on your next local bus ride within two hours. D train:

  • From 10:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, F/N/Q trains and free shuttle buses will replace D trains between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and 34 St-Herald Sq due to track replacement north of DeKalb Av. D trains will run as follows: between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr (express between Atlantic Av and 36 St) and between 34 St-Herald Sq and Norwood-205 St. =Free shuttle buses will run between W 4 St-Wash Sq and Grand St, stopping at B’way-Lafayette St. =For service between Manhattan and Brooklyn, take the N or Q via transfer at 34 St and/or Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr. For service to W 4 St-Wash Sq, take the via transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq.

E train:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, E trains run via the F line in both directions between 36 St and 2 Av, the last stop, due to signal modernization along the Queens Boulevard Line. Use nearby F stations on 6 Av, 7/A/C/D/R, and/or Lexington Av 4 local or 6 to complete your trip. For service to Queens Plaza, use the R trains days/evenings. Transfer at W 4 St-Wash Sq A/C/E, Times Sq-42 St/Port Authority 7/A/C/R, 47-50 Sts D/E/F, 21 St-Queensbridge E/F, and/or 74 St Roosevelt AV 7/E/F/R. Free shuttle buses connect Court Sq-23 St, 21 St-Queensbridge, and Queens Plaza.

E/F trains:

  • From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, E/F trains run local in both directions between 71 Av and Roosevelt Av due to signal modernization along the Queens Boulevard Line.

F train:

  • At all times until December 2018, F trains will skip 57 St in both directions due to due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use nearby stations at 57 St-7 Av N/Q/R/W, 5 Av/59 St N/R/W, 7 Av B/D/E, 5 Av/53 St E/M or 47-50 Sts B/D/F/M. Local buses are also available along 5 Av, 6 Av and 57 St.

F/M trains:

  • At all times until December 2018, F/M trains will skip 23 St in both directions due to due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. The 23 St F/M station opened around the time of World War II, in December 1940. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby 34 St-Herald Sq or 14 St F/M stations along 6 Av. Or, use the nearby 23 St R/W station on Broadway. Local buses are also available along 6 Av and 7 Av.

G train:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3, Court Sq-bound G trains skip Bedford Nostrand Avs due to station maintenance. As an alternative, use a Church Av-bound G train to complete your trip. Transfer at Myrtle-Willoughby Avs or Classon Av.

J train:

  • At all times until Summer 2018, Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer-bound J trains skip 121st St. due to station rehabilitation work. For service to this station, take the J to Sutphin Blvd. and transfer to a Broad S.t-bound J. As a reminder, Broad St.-bound J trains skip 121st St. from 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. on weekdays; take the Z instead. For service from this station, take the J to 111st St. and transfer to a Jamaica Center-bound J.
  • At all times until Jan. 2019, Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer-bound J trains skip 104 St due to station rehabilitation work. Use a Manhattan-bound J train to complete your trip. Transfer atSutphin Blvd, 111 St, or Woodhaven Blvd. As a reminder Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer-bound J trains also skip 121 St at all times until late Summer 2018 due to station rehabilitation work.
  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3, free shuttle buses and/or 4/6/F replace J trains between Hewes St and Broad St due to structural maintenance and inspection. J service will operate between Jamaica Ctr and Hewes St. Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service between Hewes St and Delancey-Essex Sts. Transfer between trains and buses at Hewes St and/or Delancey-Essex Sts F. For service between Delancey-Essex Sts and Broad St, use 6 to/from nearby stations via transfer at Bleecker St/B’way Lafayette St. Transfer to/from the 4 at Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall. For service to/from Manhattan, use the A/C or L via transfer at Broadway Junction.

M train:

  • From 6:30 a.m. to 12 midnight Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 2, free shuttle buses and/or the J replace M trains between Delancey-Essex Sts and Myrtle Av due to structural maintenance and inspection. M trains will operate between Metropolitan Av and Myrtle Av. For service between Delancey-Essex Sts and Hewes St, use free shuttle buses. For service between Hewes St and Myrtle Av. Take the J. As a reminder, M service between 71 Av and Delancey-Essex Sts will end at 8:15 p.m. on Friday night.

N train:

  • At all times until fall 2018, Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N trains skip Fort Hamilton Pkwy, New Utrecht Ave., 18th Av., 20th Ave., Kings Hwy, Avenue U and 86th St. due to station rehabilitation work at nine stations on the Sea Beach Line.
    • For service from these stations, take a Manhattan-bound N to Bay Pkwy or 8th Ave. and transfer to a Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N.
    • For New Utrecht Ave.-62 St., take the D. Transfer between N and D trains at 36th St. or Coney Island-Stillwell Ave.
    • For service to these stations, take the Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N to Bay Pkwy or Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. and transfer to a Manhattan-bound N.
  • At all times until February 2019, N trains will skip Broadway and 39th Ave. in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby open Astoria line stations at 30th Ave., 36th Ave., or Queensboro Plaza via the Q102 bus.
  • At all times until July 2019, N trains will run local in both directions between 59 St and 36 St in Brooklyn due to structural rehabilitation work to repair and replace steel columns, lighting, ventilators, and deteriorated concrete, and perform water mitigation work to address water seepage in the express tunnel between the 59 St and 36 St stations. N trains will stop at 53 St and 45 St in both directions.
  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound N trains skip 30 Av and 36 Av due to station enhancements at Broadway and 39 Av. As an alternative, use an Astoria Blvd-bound N train to complete your trip. Transfer at Queensboro Plaza or Astoria Blvd. As a reminder, due to ongoing station renovations, N trains skip Broadway and 39 Av in both directions at all times until February 2019.
  • From 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, N trains run local in both directions between 36 St and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and due to track replacement north of the DeKalb Av station. Astoria-bound N trains run via the R line (Lower Manhattan) from Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr to Canal St, also due to track replacement work. Astoria-bound N trains will make station stops at DeKalb Av, Jay St-MetroTech, Court St, Whitehall St, Rector St, Cortlandt St, and City Hall. As a reminder, N trains will run local in both directions between 59 St and 36 St in Brooklyn.
  • From 5:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound N trains are rerouted via the D line from 36 St to Coney Island-Stillwell Av due to track maintenance north of Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue. As an alternative, use a Manhattan-bound N train to complete your trip. Transfer at Coney Island-Stillwell Av or New Utrecht Av-62 St.

Q train:

  • From 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 96 St-bound Q trains are rerouted via the R line (Lower Manhattan) from DeKalb Av to Canal St due to track replacement. 96 St-bound Q trains will make station stops at Jay St-MetroTech, Court St, Whitehall St, Rector St, Cortlandt St, and City Hall.
