NYC Ranks Poorly In 'Best & Worst Places To Rent' Study
Out of 180 cities in a recent WalletHub study, New York City ranked 109th — and near the bottom on affordability and cost of living.

NEW YORK CITY — Surprise, surprise — New York City isn't a great place to be a renter, according to a new study.
Just where does the Big Apple's mix of high-lost, low-space rentals fit stand among 180 American cities?
WalletHub gave the answer: 109th.

The study titled "2021's Best & Worst Places to Rent in America" ranked cities based on 22 measures of rental attractiveness and quality of life.
New York City fared better in some categories than others. In terms of cost of living, it ranked 167th, the study found.

On rental affordability and rental vacancy rate, it was 157th and 154th, according to the study. That means even though the coronavirus pandemic sent rents to record lows and selections to new highs, the city has a long way to go.
Here's a breakdown of where New York City stood in several categories:
- 18th – Rent-to-Price Ratio
- 45th – Safety
- 52nd – % of Residents Who Are Fully Vaccinated
- 95th – City Satisfaction Ranking
- 138th – Severely Cost-Burdened Renter Households
- 154th – Rental Vacancy Rate
- 157th – Rental Affordability
- 159th – Job Market
- 167th – Cost of Living
So where's the best place in America to rent? Sioux Falls, South Dakota, according to the study.
The study didn't assess how excited New Yorkers would be to give up city life for the Great Plains.
