NEW YORK CITY — The peak of the heat wave in New York City is here as temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s Thursday with humidity making it feel like near 100 degrees outside, according to forecasters.

The National Weather Service’s HeatRisk map has labeled most of New York as a level 4 for Thursday. Level 4 showcases extreme heat that is either rare or long in duration.
Experts recommend avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon and evening hours, which is usually the hottest part of the day.

People who must be outside are encouraged to drink plenty of water and take breaks to cool off in the shade, according to AccuWeather.
The extreme heat will continue Friday, with a high temperature of 94 degrees in the city. A possible thunderstorms could hit the area in the afternoon, but it will not dampen the already high humidity.
Saturday will be hot and humid as well with temperatures reaching 86 degrees. Sunday will be even hotter with sunny skies and a high of 90 degrees, according to forecasters.
Due to the heat wave, the city has opened more than 500 cooling centers. They are open to the public and include libraries, senior centers and other locations.
