NYC Subway Best In Nation, Says Report That Will Shock Commuters

Despite delays, derailments and chaos, New York City apparently has the best subway system in the U.S.

NEW YORK, NY – Signal problems, trapped commuters, derailments and millions of dollars in lost work hours. Yet somehow a report lists New York City's subway system as the best in the country.

A study by urban planning company Arcadis says the troubled transit system is better than those in 22 other cities, the New York Post reports. Researchers seemed particularly impressed by the fact that it runs 24 hours – and not too concerned that it's become the bane of commuters' lives.

“New York is doing well because of its comprehensive subway network that operates 24 hours and the fact that trains go to Long Island and New Jersey,” Arcadis' transportation project manager Jasper de Lange said, according to the Post.

“It also scores high in the amount of people who are using public transit compared to a car to commute.”

When researchers compared it to international transit systems, however, the MTA's infrastructure fared less well. It ranked 23rd out of the 100 cities looked at, with Hong Kong, Zurich and Paris taking the top three spots, the Post reported.
