NEW YORK CITY — After temperatures hit near-record highs Thursday, a wave of "drenching rain" and thunderstorms is poised to hit New York City, according to AccuWeather.

The heat index Thursday and Friday is expected to hit up to 100 degrees, prompting a two-day heat advisory and hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service starting at 11 a.m. that warns of hot and humid conditions.

"High temperatures on Thursday climb 10-15° above normal, with some areas challenging daily record highs," a National Weather Service tweet states.

The record high for New York City was set in 1944 when temperatures reached 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

And don't expect much relief from the heat Thursday night either.

"Low temperatures Thursday night will be in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees in urban NE NJ and NYC metro, which will not allow for much cooling off at night," a National Weather Service update states.

New Yorkers also won't have to contend with just the heat.

A slow-moving cold front is expected to bring showers and thunderstorms into the region, according to the National Weather Service.

A chance of thunderstorms will enter the forecast Thursday night, before Friday's 50 percent chance of precipitation, the forecast states.

AccuWeather warns that conditions could be right for widespread "drenching downpours" across the eastern United States.

"At this time, AccuWeather meteorologists are projecting that the heaviest rains in the Northeast will tend to develop over the northern parts of Maryland and Virginia through much of Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey, central and southeastern New York and southwestern New England from Friday to Saturday," an AccuWeather report states.
