NYC Weather Forecast: More Rain To Follow Storm's Wreckage

The powerful thunderstorm knocked down trees and wreaked havoc on commutes.

NEW YORK, NY — A Tuesday evening thunderstorm knocked down trees, wreaked havoc on commutes and reportedly killed three people in the New York City area — but the rough weather isn't done yet. More showers are expected from Wednesday into next week, with the possibility of thunderstorms looming Saturday and Sunday, the National Weather Service says.

Tuesday's storm brought more than half an inch of rain and wind gusts as strong as 30 MPH to Central Park, according to the weather service's observations.

Dark clouds could be seen rolling over Manhattan in the early evening as the powerful storm approached.

Rough winds knocked down several trees in the city and the surrounding suburbs. One photo posted to Twitter showed a large tree stretched across a street in Park Slope, Brooklyn. The storm even blew metal and steel beams off the roof of a building in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Fallen trees killed three people in the city's northern suburbs, including an 11-year-old girl in Newburgh and two men in Connecticut, according to ABC 7.

Downed trees forced the Metro-North Railroad to halt service on its three busiest lines during the evening rush hour, creating a mess at Grand Central Terminal in Midtown. Officials also temporarily closed entrances to the train hub to prevent overcrowding.

The subways weren't immune — fallen wood also rankled commutes on the 5 train, the Staten Island Railway and the Franklin Avenue Shuttle in Brooklyn, according to MTA Twitter posts.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency Tuesday night for Putnam, Sullivan, Dutchess and Orange counties in the Hudson Valley, pledging to deploy 125 members of the National Guard and other state resources to help with storm recovery.

"New York has once again withstood the fury of Mother Nature and now is the time for the state and our local partners to get communities throughout the Mid-Hudson region up and running again," Cuomo said in a statement.

Another half an inch of rain could drench New York City on Wednesday. Showers are most likely in the early afternoon but a chance of rain will linger throughout the day, according to the National Weather Service forecast. The temperature is expected to drop to around 55 degrees by 4 p.m.

Wet weather is in the forecast through Monday, and more thunderstorms could hit the city on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, the weather service says. Sunshine is expected to finally return on Tuesday.
