NYC Weather Forecast: Thunderstorms Kick Off Weekend

NEW YORK, NY — A Friday afternoon thunderstorm could kick off a weekend of mixed weather in New York City, the latest National Weather Service forecast shows. More wet weather is expected to hit the five boroughs into Friday evening and possibly return on Saturday.

About a third of an inch of rain is expected to soak the city from Friday morning until around 8 p.m., the NWS says. There's also a chance of thunder from around 10 a.m. until the early evening.

Temperatures will be slightly cooler than average because of the clouds and rain, with a high near 57 degrees, the weather service says.

Sunshine will return on Saturday, driving the high up near 65. But a chance of rain will roll in late in the morning and linger through the night, the NWS forecast shows. Scattered showers are mainly expected after 5 p.m.

Sunday will be sunny but slightly cooler, with a high near 56 degrees, the NWS says.

Things could warm up significantly next week, with the high expected to near 80 on Wednesday, the forecast shows.

Rain, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. High near 57. East wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

A 30 percent chance of rain before 9pm. Cloudy, then gradual clearing toward daybreak, with a low around 49. North wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable in the evening.

Saturday
Scattered showers, mainly after 5pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 65. Light southwest wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday Night
Scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 48. West wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Sunday
A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 9am. Partly sunny, with a high near 56. Northwest wind 13 to 15 mph.
