NEW YORK — Time to bundle up. New York City is in for a freeze this weekend as temperatures drop into the 20s and winds make it feel even colder, forecasters say.

The mercury will hit a frigid low of about 27 degrees early Saturday morning with a wind chill in the low 20s, according to the National Weather Service.

That will follow an unusually cold Friday with a high near 39 and wind gusts as strong as 32 MPH, the forecast shows.

The weather service has issued a freeze warning for the five boroughs that will be in effect from midnight to 7 a.m. Saturday. The bitter cold could damage outdoor plumbing and kill "sensitive vegetation," the weather service says, so bring your plants inside.

The weekend will bring some warmer weather, with a high near 42 degrees on Saturday and a high near 51 on Sunday, according to the forecast. Sunshine is expected both days.
