NYC Weekend Subway Service Changes For August 4-6
Heads up: The 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, J, M, N, Q, R and S trains won't be running normally this weekend.

NEW YORK, NY — Here's how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will screw up your plans this weekend — from late Friday night, Aug. 3, through early Monday morning, Aug. 6 — in the name of "upgrading and maintaining our tracks, stations and signal systems in order to continue to provide our customers with safe and reliable service.
Getting around on the subway this weekend is going to be tough, as a staggering 20(!) train lines will be running with modified service. (For more New York City news delivered straight to your inbox sign up for Patch's free newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

- From 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, August 4, and from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 1 trains run every 16 minutes between 137 St and 242 St due to track replacement. The last stop for some trains headed toward 242 St is 137 St. To continue your trip, transfer at 137 St.

- From 9:30 p.m. Friday, August 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, August 6, free shuttle buses will replace 2 trains between 135 St and E 180 St due to track replacement. 2 trains will run in two sections: between Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College and the 148 St 3 line station, and between E 180 St and Wakefield-241 St. Free shuttle buses will run between 135 St and E 180 St. Transfer between trains and buses at 135 St and/or E 180 St.
3 train:
- At all times until November 2018, 3 trains will skip 145 St in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. The 145 St 3 line station opened more than a century ago in 1904. During this closure, 3 trains will run between New Lots Av and 96 St, and via the 1 to 137 St, the last stop. Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service between 148 St and 135 St. Transfer between 2/3 trains at 96 St and between 2 trains at 135 St. For a graphical guide to these alternate travel directions, click here.
4 train:
- From 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, August 4, and from 8:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, August 5, Manhattan-bound 4 trains skip Mosholu Pkwy, Bedford Pk Blvd, Kingsbridge Rd, Fordham Rd, and 1833 St due to track replacement. As an alternative, use a Woodlawn-bound 4 train to complete your trip. Transfer at Burnside Av or Woodlawn.
5 train:
- From 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, August 4, and from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, August 5, free shuttle buses will replace 5 trains between 149 St-Grand Concourse and E 180 St due to track replacement. 5 trains will run in two sections: between Bowling Green and 149 St-Grand Concourse, and between E 180 St and Eastchester-Dyre Av. Free shuttle buses will run between 149 St and E 180 St. Transfer between trains and buses at 149 St and/or E 180 St.
- From 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, August 4, and from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 5 trains will run every 20 minutes between Bowling Green and 149 St-Grand Concourse, due to track replacement. Trains from Manhattan skip 138 St-Grand Concourse. Take the 4 instead. Also, beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, August 3, 5 service will end early between Bowling Green and E 180 St. As an alternative, take the 2 and/or 4 instead.
4/6 trains:
- At all times until December 2018, 4/6 trains will skip 28 St in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. The 28 St 6 station is one of the oldest in the subway system, since it opened on the day that subway service began in October 1904. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby 6 stations along Park Av South at 33 St or 23 St. Or, use the nearby 28 St R/W station Broadway. Local buses are also available along Lexington Av and Madison Av.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, uptown 4/6 trains will skip 23 St and 33 St due to station enhancements at 28 St. Use a downtown 4 local or 6 to complete your trip. Transfer at Grand Central-42 St or 14 St-Union Sq. As a reminder, the 28 St station is closed for extensive renovations until December 2018.
7 train:
- From 5:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, August 4, Manhattan-bound 7 trains run express from 74 St-Broadway to Queensboro Plaza due to track replacement. Use a Flushing-Main St bound 7 train to complete your trip. Transfer at Queensboro Plaza, 61 St-Woodside, or 74 St-Broadway.
A/C trains:
- At all times until September 2018, A and C trains skip 163rd St.-Amsterdam Ave. in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby 168th St. A and C, 155th St. A and C, or 157th St. 1 instead. Use M3, M100 or M101 buses and transfer to the A and C at 168th St. or 155th St. with MetroCard. Need to transfer to another bus? Ask the M3, M100 or M101 driver for a MetroCard Bus Transfer which is valid on your next local bus ride within two hours. On your return trip, ask the station agent at 168 St or 155 St for a transfer to the bus.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, downtown A/C trains will run express from 59 St-Columbus Circle to Canal St due to signal improvements. For 23 St and Spring St, take an uptown A or C. Transfer at Canal St, W 4 St-Wash Sq, 14 St, or 34 St-Penn Station. or service to 50 St, transfer to an uptown A local, or C train at 42 St-Port Authority. From 50 St, take the F. As a reminder, F trains run via the E line to 42 St-Port Authority, and then via the A line to Jay St-MetroTech in Brooklyn.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, August 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, August 6, downtown A/C trains skip 155 St and 135 St due to station enhancements. Use an uptown A local, or C to complete your trip. Transfer at 125 St, 145 St, or 168 St. As a reminder,C trains do not run overnight, and the 163 St-Amsterdam Av station is closed for renovations until September 2018.
A/S trains:
- At all times until Monday, September 3, A service will be suspended in both directions between Broad Channel and Far Rockaway-Mott Ave. due to a flood protection project in the Rockaways. During this closure, A service will operate between Inwood-207th St. and Broad Channel, and via the S to/from Rockaway Park-Beach 116th St. S shuttle trains will run between Rockaway Park-Beach 116th St. and Beach 90th St., and via the A to/from Far Rockaway-Mott Ave. For Far Rockaway/Mott Ave.-bound service take the S via transfer at Beach 90th St.
B train:
- Beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, August 3, B service will end early due to station improvements at 145 Street. As an alternative, B line customers should take the C/D and/or Q instead. As a reminder, B service does not run on weekends.
B/C trains:
- At all times until September 2018, B and C trains will skip Cathedral Parkway-110th St. in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, walk to the nearby B and C stations at 116th St. and 103rd St., along Fredrick Douglas Blvd/Central Park West. Or take the 1 at 110th St., along Broadway. Use the M10 bus along Fredrick Douglas Blvd and transfer to the B and C (A overnight) at 116th St. or 103rd St. with MetroCard. If you need to transfer to another bus, ask the M10 bus operator for a MetroCard Bus Transfer, which can be used on your next local bus ride within two hours. On your return trip, ask the station agent at 116 St or 103 St for a transfer to the bus.
- At all times until late October 2018, B and C trains will skip 72nd and 86th streets in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project.
- For service to/from 72 St, use nearby B/C stations at 81 St-Museum of Natural History and 59 St-Columbus Circle. Or take the 1/2/3 at, along Broadway. Use an M10 bus along Frederick Douglass Blvd and transfer to the B/C (A overnight) at 81 St or 59 St with MetroCard.
- For service to/from 86 St, use nearby B/C stations at 81 St-Museum of Natural History and 96 St. Or take the 1/2/3 at 86 St, along Broadway. Use an M10 bus along Frederick Douglass Blvd and transfer to the B/C (A overnight) at 81 St or 96 St with MetroCard.
- For either station, if you need to transfer to another bus, ask the M10 bus operator for a MetroCard Bus Transfer which can be used on your next local bus ride within two hours. On your return trip, ask the station agent at 81 St, 59 St, or 96 St for a transfer to the bus
D train:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, August 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, August 6, Norwood-205 St bound D trains skip 170 St, 174-175 Sts and 182-183 Sts due to track maintenance. As an alternative, use a Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound D train to complete your trip. Transfer at Fordham Rd, Tremont Av, or 167 St.
E train:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, August 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, August 6, E trains are rerouted in both directions via the F line between 21 St-Queensbridge and Lexington Av-63 St, and via the R line between 57 St and Whitehall St, the last stop, due to signal improvements. As a reminder, downtown F trains run via the E line from Roosevelt Av to 42 St-Port Authority, then via the A line to Jay St-MetroTech in Brooklyn. Jamaica-bound F trains are rerouted via the E after 47-50 Sts to Queens Plaza. Use the A/C or F to complete your trip via transfer at Roosevelt Av E/F and/or W 4 St-Wash Sq A/C/F. For stations between World Trade Center and 7 Av, use A/C or D trains instead.
E/F trains:
- From 11:45 p.m. Friday, August 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, August 6, Jamaica Center-bound E and Jamaica-bound F trains skip 75 Av, Briarwood, and Sutphin Blvd F due to signal modernization. Use a Manhattan-bound E or F to complete your trip. Transfer at Parsons Blvd F, Jamaica-Van Wyck E, Union Tpke or 71 Av.
E/R trains:
- From 11:45 p.m. Friday, August 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, August 6, Jamaica Center-bound E and 71 Av-bound R trains run express from 21 St-Queensbridge E/Queens Plaza R to 71 Av due to signal modernization. Use a Manhattan-bound E local or R to complete your trip. Transfer at 71 Av, Roosevelt Av, Queens Plaza, or 21 St-Queensbridge F Station. As a reminder, R trains do not run in Queens overnight.
F train:
- At all times until December 2018, F trains will skip 57 St in both directions due to due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use nearby stations at 57 St-7 Av N/Q/R/W, 5 Av/59 St N/R/W, 7 Av B/D/E, 5 Av/53 St E/M or 47-50 Sts B/D/F/M. Local buses are also available along 5 Av, 6 Av and 57 St.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, August 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, August 6, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound F trains are rerouted via the E from Roosevelt Av to 42 St-Port Authority, then via the A line to Jay St-MetroTech in Brooklyn due to signal improvements. Jamaica-bound F trains run via the E after 47-50 Sts to Queens Plaza. As an alternative, use the E/D and/or A local, C or Jamaica-bound F to complete your trip. Transfer at Roosevelt Av, 34 St-Herald Sq, W 4 St or Jay St-MetroTech.
F/G trains:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, 179 St-bound F and Court Sq-bound G trains will skip Fort Hamilton Pkwy, 15 St-Prospect Park and 4 Av-9 St due to track maintenance. As an alternative, use a Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound F or Church Av-bound G to complete your trip. Transfer at Smith-9 Sts, 7 Av, or Church Av.
F/M trains:
- At all times until December 2018, F/M trains will skip 23 St in both directions due to due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. The 23 St F/M station opened around the time of World War II, in December 1940. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby 34 St-Herald Sq or 14 St F/M stations along 6 Av. Or, use the nearby 23 St R/W station on Broadway. Local buses are also available along 6 Av and 7 Av. J train:
- At all times until Summer 2018, Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer-bound J trains skip 121st St. due to station rehabilitation work. For service to this station, take the J to Sutphin Blvd. and transfer to a Broad S.t-bound J. As a reminder, Broad St.-bound J trains skip 121st St. from 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. on weekdays; take the Z instead. For service from this station, take the J to 111st St. and transfer to a Jamaica Center-bound J.
- From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Au.g 3 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, J service is suspended in both directions between Crescent St and Jamaica Center due to station rehabilitation work at 121 St and 104 St. J trains will run between Broad St and Crescent St. Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service, and make all J line station stops between Crescent St and 121 St, and connect with the E at Jamaica-Van Wyck. Transfer between trains and free shuttle buses at Jamaica-Van Wyck E or Crescent St J. As a reminder, the Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer-bound J platforms at 104 St and 121 St are closed for renovations until late Summer 2018.
M train:
- Beginning 8:15 p.m. Friday, August 3, M service will end early between 71 Av and Delancey-Essex Sts due to signal improvements.
N train:
- At all times until fall 2018, Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N trains skip Fort Hamilton Pkwy, New Utrecht Ave., 18th Av., 20th Ave., Kings Hwy, Avenue U and 86th St. due to station rehabilitation work at nine stations on the Sea Beach Line.
- For service from these stations, take a Manhattan-bound N to Bay Pkwy or 8th Ave. and transfer to a Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N.
- For New Utrecht Ave.-62 St., take the D. Transfer between N and D trains at 36th St. or Coney Island-Stillwell Ave.
- For service to these stations, take the Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N to Bay Pkwy or Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. and transfer to a Manhattan-bound N.
- At all times until February 2019, N trains will skip Broadway and 39th Ave. in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby open Astoria line stations at 30th Ave., 36th Ave., or Queensboro Plaza via the Q102 bus.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, August 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, August 6, free shuttle buses will replace N trains in both directions between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and 59 St due to electrical improvements. N trains will run via the D line. Free shuttle buses will make N line station stops to/from Stillwell Av. For 45 St, 53 St, and 59 St, take the R. Transfer between D/N and R at 36 St. For stations between 59 St, New Utrecht Av, and Stillwell Av, transfer to/from buses at Stillwell Av, New Utrecht Av, or 59 St R.
- From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, August 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday, August 5, free shuttle buses will replace N trains in both directions between Ditmars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza due to track replacement. N trains will run between Queensboro Plaza and 36 St, Brooklyn, and via the D to/from Coney Island-Stillwell Av. Free shuttle buses make all N line station stops between Ditmars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza. Transfer between trains and buses at Queensboro Plaza.
Q train:
- From 5:45 a.m. Saturday, August 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday, August 5, Coney Island-bound Q trains skip Avenue U and Neck Rd due to track maintenance. Use a Manhattan-bound Q train to complete your trip. Transfer at Sheepshead Bay or Kings Hwy.
R train:
- From 11:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Friday to Monday, August 3 to August 6, R trains will not run between Whitehall St and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr due to signal improvements. As an alternative, take the N train. R trains will skip Union St, 4 Av-9 St, Prospect Av, and 25 St in both directions. Take the N train. Transfer between N and R trains at 36 St or Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr.
