NYC Weekend Subway Service Changes March 23-24
Heads up: The 1, 2, 5, 7, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, J, L, M, N, Q and R trains won't be running normally this weekend.

NEW YORK, NY — Here's how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will screw up your plans this weekend — from late Friday night, March 22, through early Monday morning, March 25 — in the name of "upgrading and maintaining our tracks, stations and signal systems in order to continue to provide our customers with safe and reliable service.
Getting around on the subway this weekend is going to be tough, as 17 train lines will be running with modified service. (For more New York City news delivered straight to your inbox sign up for Patch's free newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

1 train:

- At all times until early 2020, trains skip 168 St in both directions due to elevator replacement work. For alternate service take the A/C at/to this station. Transfer between 1 and A trains at 59 St-Columbus Circle. A free out-of-system transfer with a MetroCard is available between 207 St or 215 St 1 and 207 St A. Take the M5 bus to/from 157 St 1. During late nights the M5 will run between 168 St and 157 St.
1/2 trains:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 25, downtown trains will run express from 34 St-Penn Station to Chambers St due to track maintenance and tie block renewal at 23 St. As an alternative, use an uptown 1 or 2 local train to complete your trip. Transfer at Chambers St, 14 St, or 34 St-Penn Station.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 25, uptown trains will skip 50 St, 59 St, and 66 St due to track replacement at 59 St. As an alternative, use a downtown 1 or 2 local train to complete your trip. Transfer at 72 St, or Times Sq-42 St.
2 train:
- From 4:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 24, trains will run every 15 minutes, and downtown trains will skip Jackson Av due to track maintenance. As an alternative, use an uptown 2 to complete your trip. Transfer at 3 Av-149 St or Intervale Av.
2/5 trains:
- At all times until July 2019, Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College bound trains will skip Winthrop St due to staircase and platform edge rehabilitation work. During this closure, for service to Winthrop St, take a Flatbush Av-bound 2/5 to Sterling St and transfer to a B44 local or B44 SBS bus to complete your trip. The station agent will issue transfer tickets upon request. Or, take a Flatbush Av-bound 2/5 to Church Av and transfer to a Manhattan-bound 2 or 5 train. For service from Winthrop St, use the nearby Church Av station or the B44/B44 SBS bus. Or, take the Manhattan-bound 2/5 to Sterling St and transfer to a Flatbush Av-bound 2/5 train.
5 train:
- From 7:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 24, Bronx-bound trains will skip 138 St-Grand Concourse due to track maintenance between 3 Av-149 St and Jackson Av. Take the 4 instead. Transfer to the 4 at 125 St.
- From 7:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 24, trains will not run between E 180 St and 149 St-Grand Concourse due to track maintenance between 3 Av-149 St and Jackson Av. Take the 2 instead. 5 service will run in two sections: between Eastchester-Dyre Av and E 180 St, and between 149 St-Grand Concourse and Bowling Green, every 20 minutes. Transfer between 2 and 5 trains at E 180 St and/or 149 St-Grand Concourse. As a reminder, Eastchester-Dyre Av bound trains are skipping Gun Hill Rd until September 2019.
- At all times until September 2019, Eastchester-Dyre Av bound trains will skip Gun Hill Rd due to station rehabilitation work. When finished, this will yield a better travel experience for customers, including the installation of a mezzanine to platform elevator, providing mobility impaired customers with better accessibility. Rehabilitation work will consist of the expansion and reconfiguration of the control house, a new booth, a larger unpaid area, new ADA signage and cameras throughout the station, new station entrance and retail configuration, reconstructed platforms, new ADA boarding areas and tactile platform warning strips, new ADA hand railings along the platform staircases and modifications to the platform canopies to accommodate the new elevator shafts. In order to accomplish the repair and reconstruction of the platforms within a safe environment, the northbound side of this station will be closed for approximately six months. For service to this station, take the 5 to Baychester Av and transfer to a Manhattan-bound 5. For service from this station, take the 5 to Pelham Pkwy and transfer to an Eastchester-Dyre Av bound 5.
7 train:
- From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Mar. 23 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Mar. 24, 34 St-Hudson Yards bound trains will run express from Mets-Willets Point to Queensboro Plaza due to ongoing signal modernization work on the Flushing Line. Trains will stop at 74 St-Broadway. As an alternative, use a Flushing-bound 7 train to complete your trip. Transfer at Queensboro Plaza, 61 St-Woodside, 74 St-Broadway, Junction Blvd, or Mets-Willets Point.
A train:
- From 10 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 25, downtown trains will run local from 125 St to Canal St, and uptown trains will run local from 59 St-Columbus Circle to 125 St due to track maintenance including drain cleaning on the express tracks between 59 St and 125 St.
A/C trains:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 25, uptown trains will run express from Canal St to 59 St-Columbus Circle due to electrical improvements and welding work. As an alternative, use a downtown A local or C train to complete your trip. Transfer at 59 St-Columbus Circle, 42 St-Port Authority, 34 St-Penn Station, 14 St, W 4 St, or Canal St. As a reminder, C trains do not run overnight.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 25, Manhattan-bound trains will skip Kingston-Throop Avs, Franklin Av, Clinton-Washington Avs, and Lafayette Av due to track maintenance, including drain line replacement between Crown Hts-Utica Av and Franklin Av. As an alternative, use a Queens-bound A or Euclid Av-bound C train to complete your trip. Transfer at Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts, Nostrand Av, or Utica Av. As a reminder, C trains do not run overnight.
B train:
- Beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22, B service will end early due to track maintenance including drain cleaning on the express tracks between 59 St and 125 St. Take C/D and or Q trains instead. As a reminder, B trains do not run on weekends.
D train:
- From 10 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 25, trains will run local in both directions between 125 St and 59 St-Columbus Circle due to track maintenance including drain cleaning on the express tracks between 59 St and 125 St.
E train:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 25, E trains will run via the F line in both directions between 36 St and 2 Av, the last stop, due to track maintenance and electrical improvements and welding work in the East River Tube. Use nearbyF stations on 6 Av, 7/A/C/D/R, and/or Lexington Av 4 local or 6 to complete your trip. For Queens Plaza, use the R on days/evenings. Transfer at W 4 St A/C/E, Times Sq-42 St/Port Authority, 7/A/C/R, 47-50 Sts D/E/F, 21 St-Queensbridge E/F, and/or 74 St-Roosevelt Av 7/E/F/R. Free shuttle buses connect Court Sq-23 St, 21 St-Queensbridge, and Queens Plaza.
E/F trains:
- From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Mar. 23 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 25, trains will run local in both directions in Queens due to ongoing signal modernization work on the Queens Boulevard Line.
F train:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 25, trains will run between Jamaica-179 St and Church Av due to track maintenance near Ditmas Av. Free shuttle buses will replace trains between Church Av and Coney Island-Stillwell Av, making all F line station stops between Church Av and Coney Island-Stillwell Av. Transfer between trains and buses at Church Av. For direct service between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and downtown Brooklyn/Manhattan, take the D/N or R.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 25, uptown trains will skip 14 St and 23 St due to electrical improvements and welding work. As an alternative, use a downtown F train to complete your trip. Transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq or W 4 St.
G train:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 25, free shuttle buses will replace trains between Bedford-Nostrand Avs and Court Sq due to track maintenance near Greenpoint Avenue and Nassau Avenue, and elevator work at Greenpoint Av. G trains will run between Church Av and Bedford-Nostrand Avs. Free shuttle buses will make all G line statin stops between Bedford-Nostrand Avs and Court Sq, and connect with the E/F at 21 St-Queensbridge. Transfer between G trains and buses at Bedford-Nostrand Avs.
- At all times until April 1, Church Av-bound trains will skip Flushing Av due to station improvements. As an alternative, use a Court Sq-bound G train to complete your trip. Transfer at Myrtle-Willoughby Avs or Broadway.
J train:
- From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Mar. 23 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Mar. 24, buses and E trains will replace J trains between Crescent St and Jamaica Center due to station rehabilitation work at 111 St. J trains will run between Broad St and Crescent St. Free shuttle buses will make all J line station stops between Crescent St and 121 St, and connect with the E at Jamaica-Van Wyck. Transfer between trains and free shuttle buses at Jamaica-Van Wyck E and/or Crescent St J. For JFK Airport AirTrain, use the Howard Beach A station via transfer at Broadway Junction.
- From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Mar. 23 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Mar. 24, Crescent St-bound J trains will skip Hewes St, Lorimer St and Flushing Av due to track replacement. As an alternative, use a Broad St-bound J train to complete your trip. Transfer at Myrtle Av, Marcy Av or Essex St. As a reminder, M service is suspended this weekend.
- At all times until summer 2019, trains skip 111 St in both directions due station rehabilitation work. As an alternative, use nearby stations at 104 St or 121 St to complete your trip. Take the Q56 bus to/from the 104 St and 121 St J/Z stations; free transfer with MetroCard. Additional free transfers with MetroCard will be available between Q37, Q56 and the subway at 104 St, 121 St, or Woodhaven Blvd stations. L train:
- From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22 to 7 a.m. Saturday, Mar. 23, L trains will bypass 14 St-Union Square in both directions due to station improvements. As an alternative, use the nearby 3 Av station to complete your trip. Please request a free transfer ticket from a station agent to transfer between the L at 3 Av and the N/Q/4/6 at 14 St-Union Sq.
M train:
- Beginning 8:15 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22, M service will end early between 71 Av and Delancey-Essex Sts due to track replacement work in the East River Tube.
- From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Mar. 23 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Mar. 24, free shuttle buses and J trains replace M service due to track replacement. M service is suspended. Free shuttle buses will run between Metropolitan Av and Myrtle Av all weekend. For service between Myrtle Av and Delancey-Essex Sts, take the J. Transfer between trains and buses at Myrtle Av.
N train:
- From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Mar. 23 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Mar. 24, free shuttle buses will replace trains between Ditmars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza due to station renewal work at Astoria Blvd. N trains will run between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and Queensboro Plaza. Buses will make all N line station stops between Queensboro Plaza and Ditmars Blvd. Transfer between trains and buses at Queensboro Plaza.
- At all times until December 2019, trains will skip Astoria Blvd in both directions due to station renewal work to add four new elevators and other accessibility features, as well as demolish and rebuild the station mezzanine with more vertical clearance to over-height vehicles traveling below the station structure. When this project is completed in late 2020, the Astoria Blvd station will have two street-to-mezzanine elevators, two mezzanine-to-platform elevators, a new station mezzanine, repaired or replaced structural columns and foundations, repaired concrete platform surfaces, new street and platform stairs, new platform stair enclosures, and new platform canopies and mezzanine overpass walkway canopies. Lights, signs and gates will also be replaced. The new station structure will be reinforced to support the weight of the new elevators and facilities. - As an alternative, use nearby stations use nearby stations at 30 Av or Ditmars Blvd. Take N/W to Queensboro Plaza, then 7 to 74 St-Roosevelt Av, or take the EFMR to 74 St-Roosevelt Av. As a reminder, R trains operate days/evenings only, and M/W trains do not run overnight or on the weekend. M60 SBS customers are advised to use the LaGuardia Link Q70 SBS instead. The LaGuardia Link Q70 SBS serves the 74 St-Roosevelt Av station.
- At all times until spring 2019, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound trains skip Fort Hamilton Pkwy, New Utrecht Av, 18 Av, and 20 Av, due to station rehabilitation work on the Sea Beach Line. For service to these stations, use a Manhattan-bound N train to complete your trip. Transfer at Bay Pkwy or 8 Av. For New Utrecht Av-62 St, take the D instead. Transfer between N and D trains at 36 St.
- At all times until July 2019, trains run local in both directions between 59 St and 36 St in Brooklyn due to structural rehabilitation work. N trains stop at 53 St and 45 St in both directions.
N/Q trains:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 25, downtown trains skip 49 St due to electrical improvements. As an alternative, use an uptown N/Q local or R train to complete your trip. Transfer at Times Square-42 St or 57-7 Av.
- From 11 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 25, downtown trains will stop at 28 St, 23 St, 8 St and Prince St due to station improvements at 14 St-Union Square.
R train:
- From 9:45 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, Mar. 22, and from 6 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 23 and Mar. 24, downtown trains skip 49 St due to electrical improvements. As an alternative, use an uptown N or R train to complete your trip. Transfer at Times Square-42 St or 57-7 Av.
