NYC Weekend Subway Service Changes May 4-5

Heads up: The 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, A, D, E, F, J, L, M, N, Q, R and W ​trains won't be running normally this weekend.

NEW YORK, NY — Here's how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will screw up your plans this weekend — from late Friday night, May 3, through early Monday morning, May 6 — in the name of "upgrading and maintaining our tracks, stations and signal systems in order to continue to provide our customers with safe and reliable service."

Getting around on the subway this weekend is going to be tough, as 18 train lines will be running with modified service. (For more New York City news delivered straight to your inbox sign up for Patch's free newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

1 train:

  • At all times until early 2020, trains skip 168 St in both directions due to elevator replacement work. For alternate service take the A/C at/to this station. Transfer between 1 and A trains at 59 St-Columbus Circle. A free out-of-system transfer with a MetroCard is available between 207 St or 215 St 1 and 207 St A. Take the M5 bus to/from 157 St 1. During late nights the M5 will run between 168 St and 157 St.

1/2 trains:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, May 3, to 5 a.m. Monday, May 6, downtown trains will run express from 34 St-Penn Station to Chambers St due to track maintenance including tie block renewal at 28 St. As an alternative, use an uptown 1 or 2 local train to complete your trip. Transfer at Chambers St, 14 St, or 34 St-Penn Station.
  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, May 3, to 5 a.m. Monday, May 6, uptown trains will skip 50 St, 59 St, and 66 St due to station cleaning and maintenance. As an alternative, use a downtown 1 or 2 local train to complete your trip. Transfer at 72 St or Times Sq-42 St.

2 train:

  • From 6:45 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and May 5, downtown trains will run express from Wakefield-241 St to E 180 St due to Subway Action Plan related track maintenance on the southbound local track. As an alternative, use an uptown 2 train to complete your trip. Transfer at E 180 St, Gun Hill Rd, or Wakefield-241 St. Or, take the Bx39 bus.

2/5 trains:

  • At all times until July 2019, Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College bound trains will skip Winthrop St due to staircase and platform edge rehabilitation work. During this closure, for service to Winthrop St, take a Flatbush Av-bound 2/5 to Sterling St and transfer to a B44 local or B44 SBS bus to complete your trip. The station agent will issue transfer tickets upon request. Or, take a Flatbush Av-bound 2/5 to Church Av and transfer to a Manhattan-bound 2 or 5 train. For service from Winthrop St, use the nearby Church Av station or the B44/B44 SBS bus. Or, take the Manhattan-bound 2/5 to Sterling St and transfer to a Flatbush Av-bound 2/5 train.

4/6 trains:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, May 3, to 5 a.m. Monday, May 6, uptown trains will run express from Grand Central-42 St to 125 St due to station cleaning and maintenance at southbound local stations. As an alternative use a downtown 4 local or 6 train to complete your trip. Transfer at 125 St, 86 St, 59 St, or Grand Central-42 St.

5 train:

  • Beginning 8:30 p.m., Friday to Sunday, May 3 to May 5, service will end early between E 180 St and Bowling Green due to station cleaning and maintenance. As an alternative, take 2 and/or 5 trains instead.
  • At all times until September 2019, Eastchester-Dyre Av bound trains will skip Gun Hill Rd due to station rehabilitation work. In order to accomplish the repair and reconstruction of the platforms within a safe environment, the northbound side of this station will be closed for approximately six months. For service to this station, take the 5 to Baychester Av and transfer to a Manhattan-bound 5. For service from this station, take the 5 to Pelham Pkwy and transfer to an Eastchester-Dyre Av bound 5.

7 train:

  • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, May 3, to 5 a.m. Monday, May 6, free shuttle buses will replace trains between Mets-Willets Point and Flushing-Main St due to track replacement and panel installation. 7 trains will run between 34 St-Hudson Yards and Mets-Willets Point. Free shuttle buses will run between Mets-Willets Point and Flushing-Main St. To continue your trip, transfer at Mets-Willets Point.

A train:

  • From 3:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, to 10 p.m. Sunday, May 5, free shuttle buses will replace A trains between Euclid Av and Lefferts Blvd/Howard Beach-JFK Airport due to track maintenance including rail and plate renewal and track circuit remediation between Grant Av and Rockaway Blvd. A trains will run between Inwood-207 St and Euclid Av, and between Howard Beach-JFK Airport and Far Rockaway. Shuttle buses will run along two routes: EXPRESS between Euclid Av and Howard Beach-JFK Airport, and LOCAL, making stops at Euclid Av, Grant Av, 80 St, 88 St, Rockaway Blvd, 104 St, 111 St, Lefferts Blvd, Aqueduct Racetrack, Aqueduct-North Conduit Av, and Howard Beach. Transfer at Euclid Av or Howard Beach-JFK.

D train:

  • From 10:45 p.m. Friday, May 3, to 5 a.m. Monday, May 6, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound trains will skip 182-183 Sts, 174-175 Sts, and 170 St due to track maintenance including drain cleaning between 170 St and Bedford Park Blvd. As an alternative, use a Norwood-205 St bound D train to complete your trip. Transfer at 167 St, Tremont Av, or Fordham Rd.

D/N trains:

  • Overnights from 9:45 p.m. to 5 a.m., Friday to Monday, May 3, to May 6, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound trains will run express from Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr to 36 St due to track maintenance including tie block renewal between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and Union St. As an alternative, use a Manhattan-bound D/N local or R train to complete your trip. Transfer at 36 St or Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr.

E/F trains:

  • From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, May 4, to 5 a.m. Monday, May 6, trains will run local in both directions in Queens due to ongoing Queens Boulevard signal modernization work.

J train:

  • From 3:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, to 10 p.m. Sunday, May 5, free shuttle buses and E trains will replace J trains between Broadway Junction and Jamaica Center due to track and switch replacement work near Crescent St. J trains will run between Broad St and Broadway Junction. Free shuttle buses will make all J line station stops between Broadway Junction and 121 St, and connect with the E at Jamaica-Van Wyck. Transfer between trains and free shuttle buses at Jamaica-Van Wyck E and/or Broadway Junction J. As a reminder, the 111 St J station is closed for rehabilitation work until summer 2019.
  • At all times until summer 2019, trains skip 111 St in both directions due station rehabilitation work. As an alternative, use nearby stations at 104 St or 121 St to complete your trip. Take the Q56 bus to/from the 104 St and 121 St J/Z stations; free transfer with MetroCard. Additional free transfers with MetroCard will be available between Q37, Q56 and the subway at 104 St, 121 St, or Woodhaven Blvd stations. L train:

  • Effective 10 p.m. Friday, Apr. 26 through summer 2020, L trains will run every 20 minutes between Brooklyn and Manhattan in both directions on weekends and weeknights. Within Brooklyn, L trains run every 10 minutes in both directions on weekends from 6 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Click here for more information.
  • To avoid crowds and have faster journeys on weekends and weekday evenings, NYC Transit is encouraging customers to take advantage of extensive and robust options in its alternative service plan. These options include:
    • Enhanced subway service on 7/G and M lines on weeknights and weekends, including extended M service.
    • Enhanced bus service on 14th Street, including additional weeknight and weekend M14A bus service that will be extended to connect with the Delancey/Essex St station for links to F/J, and M train service. NYC Transit will launch Select Bus Service on 14th Street this summer to provide faster bus service for Manhattan crosstown customers.
    • A new weeknight and weekend bus service, called Williamsburg Link, will operate on two routes as the B92 and the B91. They connect with subway stations at Bedford Av, Metropolitan Av-Lorimer St, Marcy Av and Hewes St. The Williamsburg Link buses began service on Thursday night, April 25.
    • Free subway transfers to make connections easier between Livonia St L and Junius St 3, and from Broadway G to Hewes St L/M or Lorimer St L/M.

M train:

  • From 10 p.m. Friday, May 3 to 1:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, and from 6 a.m. Saturday, May 4 to 1:30 a.m. Monday, May 6, special M service to help accommodate customers during the L Project runs between Brooklyn and up to 96 St in Manhattan. M trains will run between Metropolitan Av and 47-50 Sts, and via the F to/from Lexington Av/63 St, and via the Q to/from 96 St.

N train:

  • From 6:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and May 5, free shuttle buses will replace trains between 86 St and Coney Island-Stillwell Av due to track and switch maintenance work near Coney Island-Stillwell Av. N trains will run between Astoria-Ditmars Blvd and 86 St. Free shuttle buses will run between 86 St and Coney Island-Stillwell Av. To continue your trip, transfer at 86 St. For direct service between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and Downtown Brooklyn/Manhattan, take the D/F or Q.
  • At all times until December 2019, trains will skip Astoria Blvd in both directions due to station renewal work to add four new elevators and other accessibility features, as well as demolish and rebuild the station mezzanine with more vertical clearance to over-height vehicles traveling below the station structure. For more details about this critical structural repair project, refer to this prior press release.
  • At all times until summer 2019, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound trains skip Fort Hamilton Pkwy, New Utrecht Av, 18 Av, and 20 Av, due to station rehabilitation work on the Sea Beach Line. For service to these stations, use a Manhattan-bound N train to complete your trip. Transfer at Bay Pkwy or 8 Av. For New Utrecht Av-62 St, take the D instead. Transfer between N and D trains at 36 StA.
  • At all times until July 2019, trains run local in both directions between 59 St and 36 St in Brooklyn due to structural rehabilitation work. N trains stop at 53 St and 45 St in both directions.

N/Q trains:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, May 3, to 5 a.m. Monday, May 6, downtown trains will skip 49 St due to electrical improvements. As an alternative, use an uptown N/Q local or R train to complete your trip. Transfer at Times Sq-42 St or 57 St-7Av.

Q train:

  • From 5:45 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and May 5, Manhattan-bound trains will run express from Kings Hwy to Prospect Park due to track replacement and duct bank construction. As an alternative, use a Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound Q train to complete your trip. Transfer at Prospect Park, Church Av, Newkirk Plaza, or Kings Hwy.

R train:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, May 3, to 5 a.m. Monday, May 6, Bay Ridge-bound trains will run express from Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr to 36 St due to track maintenance including tie block renewal between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and Union St. As an alternative, use a Manhattan-bound N or R train to complete your trip. Transfer at 36 St or Atlantic Av Barclays Ctr.
  • From 9:45 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. Friday, May 3, and from 6 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and May 5, downtown trains will skip 49 St due to electrical improvements. As an alternative, use an uptown N or R train to complete your trip. Transfer at Times Sq-42 St or 57 St-7Av.

W train:

  • Beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, service will end early due to electrical improvements. Take the N or R. As a reminder, W trains do not run on weekends.
