NYC Weekend Subway Service Changes Oct. 27-28
Heads up: The 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, B, D, F, J, L, M, N, W, Q and S trains won't be running normally this weekend.

NEW YORK, NY — Here's how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will screw up your plans this weekend — from late Friday night, Oct. 26, through early Monday morning, Oct. 29 — in the name of "upgrading and maintaining our tracks, stations and signal systems in order to continue to provide our customers with safe and reliable service.
Getting around on the subway this weekend is going to be tough, as a staggering 16 train lines will be running with modified service. (For more New York City news delivered straight to your inbox sign up for Patch's free newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

1 train:
- At all times until winter 2018-19, downtown trains skip 238 St due to station improvements. As an alternative, take the Bx9 to 231 St, or take an uptown train to 242 St and transfer to a downtown 1.
- From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, downtown trains skip Christopher St, Houston St, Canal St, and Franklin St due to the instillation of electrical cables. As an alternative, use an uptown 1 or 2 train to complete your trip. Transfer at Chambers St or 14 St.
2 train:

- From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, downtown trains skip Christopher St, Houston St, Canal St, and Franklin St due to the instillation of electrical cables. As an alternative, use an uptown 1 or 2 train to complete your trip. Transfer at Chambers St or 14 St.
3 train:
- At all times until November 2018, 3 trains will skip 145 St in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. During this closure, 3 trains will run between New Lots Av and 96 St, and via the 1 to 137 St, the last stop. Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service between 148 St and 135 St. Transfer between 2/3 trains at 96 St and between 2 trains at 135 St.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, trains will run to/from New Lots Av all weekend, providing alternate service and due to structural repairs at the Borough Hall station.
4 train:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, trains will not run between New Lots Av and Bowling Green due to structural repairs at the Borough Hall station. Take the 2 or 3 instead. 4 trains will run between Woodlawn and Bowling Green. 3 trains will run to/from New Lots Av all weekend. For service between Manhattan and Brooklyn, take the 2 or 3 via transfer at Fulton St.
4/6 trains:
- At all times until December 2018, 4/6 trains will skip 28 St in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby 6 stations along Park Av South at 33 St or 23 St. Or, use the nearby 28 St R/W station. Local buses are also available along Lexington Av and Madison Av.
7 train:
- MTA New York City Transit is performing critical work each weekend this month to upgrade the 7 line with Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling. Once installed on the 7 line by the end of this year, CBTC will allow for more frequent and more reliable service for all users of the 7 line, which currently serves approximately 500,000 customers per weekday between Queens and Manhattan. This weekend in support of this critical CBTC installation work to keep the project on track for completion by the end of this year, the train will run as follows:
- From 12:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, to 10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, Flushing-Main St bound trains run express from Queensboro Plaza to 74 St-Broadway. As an alternative, use a Queensboro Plaza-bound 7 train to complete your trip. Transfer at 74 St-Broadway, 61 St-Woodside, or Queensboro Plaza.
- From 12:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, to 10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, free shuttle buses and E/F/N/W/S trains replace 7 trains between 34 St-Hudson Yards and Queensboro Plaza.
- 7 trains will not run in Manhattan or Long Island City. Use E/F/N or W trains for service between Manhattan and Queens. Transfer at Queensboro Plaza 7/N/W or 74 St-Roosevelt Av 7/E/F.
- Free Shuttle buses will run frequently – every five minutes during times of peak ridership – in two sections: In Manhattan between Times Square-42 St and 34 St-Hudson Yards, and in Queens between Queensboro Plaza and Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av.
- Additional train service is being scheduled on the S and W to further help customers. The 42 St S Shuttle will operate overnight (it normally does not), from 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday to Sunday, Oct. 13 to Oct. 14, and W trains run from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, between Whitehall St and Ditmars Blvd (the W does not normally run on weekends).
B train:
- From 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, B service will end early due to track maintenance near 7 Av. As an alternative, take the C/D and/or Q. As a reminder, B service does not run on weekends.
B/D trains:
- At all times until Jan. 2019, B/D trains will skip 167 St in both directions MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. As an alternative, customers are advised to use the nearby stations at 170 St B/D, 167 St 4, or 161 St-Yankee Stadium 4/B/D. Use the Bx1 or Bx2 along Grand Concourse and transfer to the subway at 170 St or 161 St-Yankee Stadium with a MetroCard. Use the Bx35 along E 167 St and transfer to the 4 at 167 St station with a MetroCard. If you need to transfer to another bus, ask the bus operator for a MetroCard Bus Transfer which can be used on your next local bus ride within two hours. - At all times until December 2018, B and D trains will skip 174-175 Sts in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. As an alternative, customers are advised to use the nearby Tremont Av or 170 St B/D stations. Use the Bx1 or Bx2 along Grand Concourse and transfer to B or D trains at Tremont Av or 170 St with a MetroCard. For either station, if you need to transfer to another bus, ask the driver for a MetroCard Bus Transfer which can be used on your next local bus ride within two hours. On your return trip, ask the station agent at the Tremont Av or 170 St stations for a transfer to the bus.
D train:
- From 10:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, F/N trains and free shuttle buses replace D trains between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and 34 St-Herald Sq due to track maintenance near West 4 St. D trains will run between 34 St-Herald Sq and Norwood-205 St. N trains will run via the D line in both directions in Brooklyn, between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and Coney Island-Stillwell Av. For service between Brooklyn and Manhattan, take the N via transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq. For W 4 St-Wash Sq and B’way-Lafayette St, take the F/M via transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq. Free shuttle buses will run between W 4 St-Wash Sq F and Grand St, stopping at B’way-Lafayette St.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, uptown trains skip 170 St and 182-183 Sts due to track maintenance. As an alternative, use a downtown D train to complete your trip. Transfer at Fordham Rd, Tremont Av, or 161 St. As a reminder, the 167 St and 174-175 Sts stations are closed for renovations.
F train:
- At all times until December 2018, F trains will skip 57 St in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service, use nearby stations at 57 St-7 Av, 5 Av/59 St, 7 Av, 5 Av/53 St or 47-50 Sts. Local buses are also available along Fifth Avenue, Sixth Avenue and 57th Street. - From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound F trains are rerouted via the E line after 36 St to 47-50 St due to track maintenance near West 4 St. As an alternative, use a Jamaica-bound F train to complete your trip via transfer at 47-50 Sts or Roosevelt Av. For Lexington Av/63 St, take the M or a Jamaica-bound F. Transfer at 47-50 Sts.
F/M trains:
- At all times until December 2018, trains will skip 23 St in both directions due to due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. The 23 St station opened around the time of World War II, in December 1940. Crews are making extensive repairs to fix structural defects and deterioration, and include functional station improvements, leading to an enhanced customer experience for approximately 31,000 daily riders who use the station. For alternate service, use the nearby 34 St-Herald Sq or 14 St stations along Sixth Avenue. Or, use the nearby 23 St R/W station on Broadway. J train:
- At all times until Fall 2018, Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer-bound trains skip 104 St and 121 St due to station rehabilitation work. Use a Manhattan-bound J train to complete your trip. Transfer at Sutphin Blvd, 111 St or Woodhaven Blvd.
- From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, to 10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, free shuttle buses and D trains replace J trains between Crescent St and Jamaica Center due to station rehabilitation at 104 St and 121 St. J service will operate between Broad St and Crescent St. Free shuttle buses will make all station stops between Crescent St and 121 St, and connect with the E at Jamaica-Van Wyck. Transfer between trains and free shuttle buses at Jamaica-Van Wyck E, and/or Crescent St J. As a reminder, the Jamaica Center-bound platforms at 104 St and 121 St are closed for renovations.
L train:
- This weekend, L trains will not run between 8 Av and Broadway Junction. L trains will run between Rockaway Pkwy and Broadway Junction. M14 and free shuttle buses will provide alternate service between 8 Av and Broadway Junction. Free shuttle buses will operate along the following three routes: between Marcy Av J/M and Lorimer St; between Lorimer St and Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs; between Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs and Broadway Junction. Transfer between trains and buses at Myrtle Wyckoff Avs M, Broadway Junction A/C/J/L, or Marcy Av J/M. Additional nearby subway and local bus service is also provided to accommodate customers. M trains will provide additional service from 11:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, and will operate between Metropolitan Av and 47-50 Sts, and via the Q line between Lexington Av/63 St and 96 St.
M train:
- From 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, M trains will provide alternative service due to track maintenance on the L/Q lines, and will run between Metropolitan Av and 47-50 Sts, and via the Q line between Lexington Av/63 St and 96 St, all weekend.
N train:
- At all times until fall 2018, Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N trains skip Fort Hamilton Pkwy, New Utrecht Ave., 18th Av., 20th Ave., Kings Hwy, Avenue U and 86th St. due to station rehabilitation work at nine stations on the Sea Beach Line.
- For service from these stations, take a Manhattan-bound N to Bay Pkwy or 8th Ave. and transfer to a Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N.
- For New Utrecht Ave.-62 St., take the D. Transfer between N and D trains at 36th St. or Coney Island-Stillwell Ave.
- For service to these stations, take the Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N to Bay Pkwy or Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. and transfer to a Manhattan-bound N
- From 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, free shuttle buses replace trains between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and 59 St due to station rehabilitation work at several stations. N trains will run via the D line in both directions in Brooklyn, between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and Coney Island-Stillwell Av. Free shuttle buses make all N line station stops between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and 59 St. For service to/from 45 St, 53 St, and 59 St, take the R. Transfer between N and R trains at 36 St. For stations between 59 St and Coney Island-Stillwell Av, transfer to/from free shuttle buses at Coney Island-Stillwell Av, New Utrecht, or 59 St.
N/W train:
- At all times until February 2019, trains will skip Broadway and 39 Av in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project. When this project is completed, customers will benefit from critical structural and safety repairs and improvements to concrete and steel features such as columns, beams, platforms, walls and stairs. There will also be other improvements and upgrades such as improved waterproofing, a reconfigured mezzanine area including new glass barriers, new security cameras, LED lighting for increased light and energy efficiency, and enhanced signage for easier navigation including digital, real-time service change and train and bus arrival information. For alternate service, use the nearby open Astoria line stations at 30 Av, 36 Av, or Queensboro Plaza via the Q102 bus. For a graphical guide to these alternate travel directions, click here.
Q train:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, free shuttle buses and D/M/N/R trains replace Q trains between Prospect Park and 96 St due to track maintenance between Prospect Park and DeKalb Av. Q trains will run between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and Prospect Park. M trains will run between to/from the 96 St Q station all weekend. Free shuttle buses will make all Q line station stops between Prospect Park and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr. Transfer between Q trains and free shuttle buses at Prospect Park, and/or between buses and D/N/R trains at Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr. Transfer between D/N/R trains and M trains at 34 St-Herald Sq. Consider using F/D/N trains for service to/from Coney Island-Stillwell Av.
S train:
- From 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday to Monday, Oct. 27 to Oct. 29, the 42 St S Shuttle will operate overnight to provide alternate service due to signal modernization on the Flushing Line. See this press release for details.

- From 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, special weekend service will run between Whitehall St and Ditmars Blvd to provide additional service due to signal modernization on the Flushing Line. See this press release for details.
