NYC Weekend Subway Service Changes Sept. 21-22

Heads up: The 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, A, C, E, B, D, F, M, N, R, J, L and S trains won't be running normally this weekend.

NEW YORK, NY — Here's how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will screw up your plans this weekend — from late Friday night, Sept. 20, through early Monday morning, Sept. 23 — for the sake of ongoing maintenance, repair and upgrade work.

This weekend, crews will be working throughout the entire subway system to do track replacement and maintenance, signal modernization, station enhancements, electrical upgrades and communication improvements.

1 train:

  • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, downtown trains will skip 86 St, 79 St, 66 St, 59 St, and 50 St due to electrical improvements. As an alternative, use an uptown 1 or 2 local train to complete your trip. Transfer at Times Sq-42 St, 72 St, or 96 St.
  • Through early 2020, trains skip 168 St in both directions due to elevator replacement work. For alternate service take the at/to this station. Transfer between and trains at 59 St-Columbus Circle. A free out-of-system transfer with a MetroCard is available between the 207 St or 215 St and 207 St . Take the M5 to/from 157 St . Late nights, the M5 will run between 168 St and 157 St. This work is part of a major elevator replacement project at five separate “deep” stations in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. The line part of the 168 St station is 112 years old. Some of the oldest components in these elevators and the accompanying machine rooms are more than 90 years old. When completed, the elevator doors at 168 St will open at both the front and rear sides at the lower mezzanine level. The rear passageway behind the elevators at the lower mezzanine level will be reopened in order to improve customer flow. For a graphical guide to these alternate travel directions click here.

2 train:

  • From 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, to 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, free shuttle buses will replace 2 trains between Wakefield-241 St and Gun Hill Rd due to track and switch maintenance near 238 St. 2 trains will run between Gun Hill Rd and Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College. Free shuttle buses will make all 2 line station stops between Gun Hill Rd and Wakefield-241 St. Transfer between buses and 2 trains at Gun Hill Rd.
  • From 11:45 p.m. to 5 a.m., Friday to Monday, Sept. 20 to Sept. 23, downtown 2 trains will skip 86 St, 79 St, 66 St, 59 St, and 50 St due to electrical improvements. As an alternative, use an uptown 1 or 2 local train to complete your trip. Transfer at Times Sq-42 St, 72 St, or 96 St.
  • From 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, trains will run every 15 minutes due to track maintenance.

2 and 5 trains:

  • Through October 2019, Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College bound trains are skipping Sterling St due to station rehabilitation work. For service to Sterling St, take a 2 or 5 train to Winthrop St and transfer to a Manhattan-bound 2 or 5. Or, use nearby Winthrop St or President St stations. For service from this station, take a 2 or 5 train to President St and transfer to a Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College bound 2 or 5 train.

3 train:

  • From 6 a.m. to 12 midnight, Saturday, Sept. 21, and from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, free shuttle buses will replace trains between New Lots Av and Crown Hts-Utica Av due to track replacement work. 3 trains will run between Harlem-148 St and Crown Hts-Utica Av. 4 trains will run between Woodlawn and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr. Free shuttle buses will make all station stops between Crown Hts-Utica Av and New Lots Av. Transfer between 3 trains and shuttle buses at Crown Hts-Utica Av.
  • From 11:45 p.m. to 5 a.m., Friday to Monday, Sept. 20 to Sept. 23, overnight service will be extended to 34 St-Penn Station due to electrical improvements. service will run between Harlem-148 St and 34 St-Penn Station.

4 train:

  • From 6:15 a.m. to 11:15 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, and from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, 2 and 3 trains will replace 4 service between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and Crown Hts-Utica Av due to track replacement work. 4 trains will run between Woodlawn and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr, the last stop. 2 and 3 trains will make all station stops between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and Franklin Av. 3 trains will make all station stops to/from Crown Hts-Utica Av. Transfer between and trains at Nevins St or Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr. Transfer between 2 and 3 trains at Franklin Av.
  • From 3:30 a.m. to 6:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, and from 11:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 to 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, free shuttle buses will replace trains between Crown Hts-Utica Av and New Lots Av due to track replacement work. trains will run between Woodlawn and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr. Free shuttle buses will make all station stops between Crown Hts-Utica Av and New Lots Av. Transfer between 4 trains and shuttle buses at Crown Hts-Utica Av.

5 trains:

  • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, downtown trains will skip Baychester Av, Gun Hill Rd, Pelham Pkwy, and Morris Park due to station rehabilitation work at Gun Hill Rd. As an alternative use an uptown train to complete your trip. Transfer at E 180 St or Dyre Av. As a reminder, the Manhattan-bound platform at Gun Hill Rd is closed for rehabilitation.
  • From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, trains will not run between E 180 St and Bowling Green due to track maintenance. Take the 2 and/or 4. 5 trains will run between Eastchester-Dyre Av and E 180 St. Transfer between and trains at E 180 St and between 2 and 4 trains at 149 St-Grand Concourse.
  • Through February 2020, Manhattan-bound trains will skip Gun Hill Rd due to ongoing station rehabilitation work. In order to accomplish the repair and reconstruction of the platforms within a safe environment, the Manhattan-bound side of this station will be closed for approximately six months. For service to this station, take the 5 to Pelham Pkwy and transfer to an Eastchester-Dyre Av-bound 5. For service from this station, take the 5 to Baychester and transfer to a Manhattan-bound 5. As a reminder, late night 5 service runs between Eastchester-Dyre Av and E 180 St.

6 trains:

  • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, free shuttle buses will replace trains between 125 St and 3 Av-138 St due to track maintenance. 6 service will operate in two sections: between Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall and 125 St, and between 3 Av-138 St and Pelham Bay Park (trains will run every 12 minutes days and evenings). Free shuttle buses will run between 125 St and 3 Av-138 St. Transfer between trains and shuttle buses at 125 St and/or 3Av-138 St.
  • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, uptown trains will skip Brook Av, Cypress Av, E 143 St, E 149 St, and Longwood Av due to track maintenance near 3 Av-138 St. As an alternative, use a downtown 6 train to complete your trip. Transfer at Hunts Point Av or 3 Av-138 St.

7 trains:

  • From 6:45 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21 and Sept. 22, Flushing-Main St bound 7 trains will skip 82 St, 90 St, 103 St, and 111 St due to track maintenance. As an alternative, use a Manhattan-bound 7 train and transfer at Mets-Willets Point, Junction Blvd, or 74 St-Broadway.

A trains:

  • From 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, to 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, free shuttle buses will replace A trains between Broad Channel and Far Rockaway due to track maintenance. A trains will replace the Rockaway Pk Shuttle. S trains will run every 20 minutes between Inwood-207 St and Broad Channel, and via the S Shuttle to/from Rockaway Park-Beach 116 St. Free shuttle buses will run between Beach 90 St and Far Rockaway. Transfer between A trains and shuttle buses at Beach 90 St.

A and C trains:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, uptown trains will skip Spring St, 23 St, and 50 St due to flood mitigation work at Spring St. As an alternative, use a downtown A local, C or E train to complete your trip. Transfer at 59 St-Columbus Circle AC, 42 St-Port Authority, 34 St-Penn Station, 14 St, W 4 St, or Canal St. To 50 St, transfer to a Queens-bound E train at 42 St-Port Authority. As a reminder, C trains do not run during the late night hours.

B trains:

  • Beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, service will end early due to flood mitigation work at Spring St. Take C, D and/or Q trains instead. As a reminder, B trains do not run on weekends.

D trains:

  • From 10:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, Norwood-205 St bound trains will skip 182-183 Sts, due to track maintenance and tie block renewal at Fordham Rd. As an alternative, use a Coney Island-bound D train to complete your trip. Transfer at Fordham Rd or Tremont Av.

D and N trains:

  • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, Manhattan-bound trains will run express from 36 St to Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr due to track replacement work. As an alternative, use a Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound D, N local or Bay Ridge-bound R train to complete your trip. Transfer at Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr or 36 St.

E trains:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sep. 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sep. 23, uptown will skip Spring St and 23 St due to flood mitigation work at Spring St. As an alternative, use a downtown A local, C or E train to complete your trip. Transfer at 34 St-Penn Station, 14 St, W 4 St, or Canal St.
  • From 10:45 p.m. Friday, Sep. 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sep. 23, Jamaica Center-bound trains will skip 36 St, Steinway St, 46 St, Northern Blvd, and 65 St due to ongoing signal modernization work along the Queens Boulevard corridor. As an alternative, use a Manhattan-bound E local or R train to complete your trip. Transfer at Roosevelt Av or Queens Plaza.

F trains:

  • From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, to 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, free shuttle buses will replace trains between Kings Hwy and Coney Island-Stillwell Av due to track and switch maintenance near Avenue X. F trains will run between 179 St and Coney Island-Stillwell Av. Free shuttle buses will make all F line station stops between Kings Hwy and Coney Island-Stillwell Av. Transfer between shuttle buses and trains at Kings Hwy. For service between Manhattan/Downtown Brooklyn and Coney Island-Stillwell Av, take the D, N or Q.

J trains:

  • From 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Sep. 21, to 10 p.m. Sunday, Sep. 22, free shuttle buses and E trains will replace trains between Broadway Junction and Jamaica Center due to track installation near Crescent St. J service will run between Broad St and Broadway Junction. Free shuttle buses will make all J line station stops between Broadway Junction and 121 St, and connect with the E at Jamaica-Van Wyck. Transfer between trains and free shuttle buses at Jamaica-Van Wyck and/or Broadway Junction J. For JFK AirTrain, use Howard Beach-JFK A station via transfer at Broadway Junction.

L trains:

  • Through summer 2020, L trains will run every 20 minutes between Brooklyn and Manhattan, in both directions on weekends and weeknights. Within Brooklyn, L trains run every 10 minutes in both directions on weekends from 6 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.
M trains:
  • Through summer 2020, service ends at approximately 10 p.m. between Forest Hills-71 Av and 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr due to ongoing signal modernization work along the Queens Boulevard corridor. For Queens, take the R. For Court Sq-23 St, Lexington Av-53 St, and 5 Av/53 St, take the E. Transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq MR or W 4 St EM.
  • Through summer 2020, from 10 p.m. Friday to 1:30 a.m. Saturday, and from 6 a.m. Saturday to 1:30 a.m. Monday, special weekend M service to help accommodate customers during the L Project runs between Brooklyn and up to 96 St in Manhattan. M trains will run between Metropolitan Av and 47-50 Sts, and via the F to/from Lexington Av/63 St, and via the Q to/from 96 St.

N trains:

  • From 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound trains will run express from Ditmars Blvd to Queensboro Plaza due to station renewal work at Astoria Blvd. As an alternative, use an Astoria-bound N train to complete your trip. Transfer at Queensboro Plaza or Ditmars Blvd. As a reminder the Astoria Blvd station is closed for ongoing renewal work.
  • Through December 2019, trains skip Astoria Blvd in both directions due to station renewal work. As an alternative, use nearby stations at 30 Av or Ditmars Blvd. Take NW to Queensboro Plaza, then 7 to 74 St-Roosevelt Av, or take the EFR to 74 St-Roosevelt Av. As a reminder, R trains operate days/evenings only, and MW trains do not run overnight or on the weekend. M60 SBS customers are advised to use the LaGuardia Link Q70 SBS instead. The LaGuardia Link Q70 SBS serves the 74 St-Roosevelt Av station.

R trains:

  • From 10:45 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, and from 6 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21 and Sept. 22, 71 Av-bound trains will skip 36 St, Steinway St, 46 St, Northern Blvd, and 65 St due to electrical improvements. As an alternative, use a Manhattan-bound E local or R train to complete your trip. Transfer at Roosevelt Av or Queens Plaza.
Rockaway S Shuttle
  • From 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, to 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, A trains will replace suspended Shuttle trains between Broad Channel and Rockaway Park due to track maintenance. S trains will not run. A service will make all Shuttle stops between Broad Channel and Rockaway Park, every 20 minutes.
42 St S Shuttle
  • Through 2020, shuttles will run less frequently, and some tracks will be periodically taken out of service due to rehabilitation work.
