NYC Weekend Subway Service Changes Sept. 8-9
Heads up: The 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, J, M, N, Q and R trains won't be running normally this weekend.

NEW YORK, NY — Here's how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will screw up your plans this weekend — from late Friday night, Sept. 7, through early Monday morning, Sept. 10 — in the name of "upgrading and maintaining our tracks, stations and signal systems in order to continue to provide our customers with safe and reliable service.
Getting around on the subway this weekend is going to be tough, as a staggering 16 train lines will be running with modified service. (For more New York City news delivered straight to your inbox sign up for Patch's free newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

1 train:
- At all times until Winter 2018-19, downtown 1 trains skip 238 St due to station improvements related to the construction of new stairways from both the street to the mezzanine level, and the mezzanine to the platform level. As an alternative, take the Bx9 to 231 St, or take an uptown 1 to 242 St and transfer to a downtown 1. For a graphical guide to these alternate travel directions, click here.
3 train:

- At all times until November 2018, 3 trains will skip 145 St in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. During this closure, 3 trains will run between New Lots Av and 96 St, and via the 1 to 137 St, the last stop. Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service between 148 St and 135 St. Transfer between 2/3 trains at 96 St and between 2 trains at 135 St.
- From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, 3 trains will not run in both directions between 96 St and 148 St due to track maintenance south of the Harlem-148 St Terminal. 3 service will operate between New Lots Av and 96 St, and via the 1 to 137 St, the last stop. Free shuttle buses will operate between 148 St and 135 St. Transfer between 2/3 trains at 96 St and between 2 trains and free shuttle buses at 135 St.
4 train:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, 4 trains will not run in both directions between New Lots Av/Crown Hts-Utica Av in Brooklyn and Bowling Green in Lower Manhattan due to signal improvements in the Joralemon Tube. 4 service will operate between Woodlawn and Bowling Green. 3 service will operate all weekend and extend to New Lots Av. For service between Manhattan and Brooklyn, take the 2 or 3 via transfer at Fulton St.
4/6 trains:
- At all times until December 2018, 4/6 trains will skip 28 St in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby 6 stations along Park Av South at 33 St or 23 St. Or, use the nearby 28 St R/W station. Local buses are also available along Lexington Av and Madison Av.
5 train:
- Beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 5 service will end early between E 180 St and Bowling Green due to track maintenance. As an alternative, and for service between Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, take the 2 or 4.
- From 7:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, 5 trains will not run between E 180 St and 149 St-Grand Concourse due to track maintenance. 5 service will operate between Bowling Green and 149 St-Grand Concourse. Transfer between 2 and 5 trains at 149 St-Grand Concourse. As a reminder, 5 trains from Manhattan skip 138 St-Grand Concourse; take the 4.
- From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, free shuttle buses will replace 5 trains between Dyre Av and E 180 St due to track replacement at Eastchester-Dyre Av. 5 trains will run every 20 minutes between Bowling Green and 149 St-Grand Concourse/E 180 St. Free shuttle buses will make all 5 line station stops between Eastchester-Dyre Av and E 180 St, all weekend. Transfer between shuttle buses and 2/5 trains at E 180 St.
6 train:
- From 6:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 and Sunday, Sept. 9, Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall bound 6 trains will run express from Parkchester to Hunts Point Av due to track maintenance south of the Parkchester station. As an alternative, use a Pelham Bay Park-bound 6 to complete your trip. Transfer at Hunts Point Av or Parkchester.
A train:
- From 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, Manhattan-bound A trains run local from Euclid Av to Broadway Junction due to drain cleaning as part of the Subway Action Plan. To continue your trip, transfer at Rockaway Blvd.
A/C trains:
- At all times until September 2018, A and C trains skip 163 St-in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby 168 St A and C , 155 St A and C, or 157 St 1 instead. Use M3, M100 or M101 buses and transfer to the at 168 St or 155 St with MetroCard. Need to transfer to another bus? Ask the M3, M100 or M101 driver for a MetroCard Bus Transfer, which is valid on your next local bus ride within two hours. On your return trip, ask the station agent at 168 St or 155 St for a transfer to the bus.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, downtown A trains run local from 59 St-Columbus Circle to W 4 St due to track replacement south of the Canal St station and in the Cranberry Tube. Downtown A/C trains are rerouted via the F line from W 4 St to Jay St-MetroTech. For service to Spring St, Canal St, and Chambers St, take the E via transfer at W 4 St. For service to Fulton St, take the E to/from World Trade Center. For service to High St, use the nearby York St F station. As a reminder, uptown A/C/E trains skip Spring St, and C trains do not run overnight.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, uptown A/C train will run express from Canal St to 59 St-Columbus Circle due to electrical improvements at W 4 St-Wash Sq. As an alternative, use a downtown A local, C or E to complete your trip. Transfer at 59 St-Columbus Circle, 42 St/Port Authority, 34 St-Penn Station, 14 St, W 4 St-Wash Sq, or Canal St. As a reminder, C trains do not run overnight.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, downtown A/C trains skip 155 St and 135 St due to station enhancements at 163 St. As an alternative, use an uptown A local, C or E to complete your trip. Transfer at 125 St, 145 St, or 168 St. As a reminder, the 168 St station is closed for renovations and C trains do not run overnight.
B train:
- Beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, B service will end early due to ongoing station enhancements at 167 St and 174-175 Sts. As an alternative, B line customers should take the C/D and/or Q instead. As a reminder, B service does not run on weekends.
B/C trains:
- At all times until late Oct. 2018, B/C trains will skip 72 St and 86 St in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project.
- For service to/from 72 St, use nearby B/C stations at 81 St-Museum of Natural History and 59 St-Columbus Circle. Or take the 123 at, along Broadway. Use an M10 bus along Frederick Douglass Blvd and transfer to the B/C (A overnight) at 81 St or 59 St with MetroCard.
- For service to/from 86 St, use nearby B/C stations at 81 St-Museum of Natural History and 96 St. Or take the 1 at 86 St, along Broadway. Use an M10 bus along Frederick Douglass Blvd and transfer to the B/C (A overnight) at 81 St or 96 St with MetroCard.
B/D trains:
- At all times until December 2018, B and D trains will skip 174-175 Sts in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. As an alternative, customers are advised to use the nearby Tremont Av or 170 St B/D stations. Use the Bx1 or Bx2 along Grand Concourse and transfer to B or D trains at Tremont Av or 170 St with a MetroCard. For either station, if you need to transfer to another bus, ask the driver for a MetroCard Bus Transfer which can be used on your next local bus ride within two hours. On your return trip, ask the station agent at the Tremont Av or 170 St stations for a transfer to the bus.
- At all times until Jan. 2019, B/D trains will skip 167 St in both directions MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. As an alternative, customers are advised to use the nearby stations at 170 St B/D, 167 St 4, or 161 St-Yankee Stadium 4/B/D. Use the Bx1 or Bx2 along Grand Concourse and transfer to the subway at 170 St or 161 St-Yankee Stadium with a MetroCard. Use the Bx35 along E 167 St and transfer to the 4 at 167 St station with a MetroCard. If you need to transfer to another bus, ask the bus operator for a MetroCard Bus Transfer which can be used on your next local bus ride within two hours. D train:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10., Manhattan-bound D trains skip 170 St, 161 St-Yankee Stadium, and 155 St due to ongoing station enhancements at 167 St and 174-175 Sts. As an alternative, use a Norwood-205 St bound D train to complete your trip. Transfer at 145 St or Tremont Av. As a reminder the 167 St and 174-175 Sts stations are closed for renovations.
- From 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, F/N trains and free shuttle buses will replace D trains between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and 34 St-Herald Sq due to track replacement north of the DeKalb Av station. D trains will run between Norwood-205 St and 34 St-Herald Sq. N trains will run via the D line in both directions between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and Coney Island-Stillwell Av, in Brooklyn. For service between Manhattan and Brooklyn, take the N via transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq. For service to W 4 St and B’way-Lafayette St, take the F via transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq. Free shuttle buses will run between W 4 St-Wash Sq and Grand St, stopping at B’way-Lafayette St.
E train:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, uptown E trains skip Spring St and 23 St due to electrical improvements at W 4 St-Wash Sq. Use a downtown A local, C or E to complete your trip. Transfer at 34 St-Penn Station, 14 St, or Canal St. As a reminder, downtown A/C trains will not stop at Spring St.
E/F trains:
- From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, E/F trains run local in both directions between 71 Av and Roosevelt Av due to signal modernization along the Queens Boulevard Line.
F train:
- At all times until Dec. 2018, F trains will skip 57 St in both directions due to due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use nearby stations at 57 St-7 Av N/Q/R/W, 5 Av/59 St N/R/W, 7 Av B/D/E, 5 Av/53 St E/M, or 47-50 Sts B/D/F/M. F/M trains:
- At all times until December 2018, F/M trains will skip 23 St in both directions due to due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. The 23 St F/M station opened around the time of World War II, in December 1940. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby 34 St-Herald Sq or 14 St F/M stations along 6 Av. Or, use the nearby 23 St R/W station on Broadway. Local buses are also available along 6 Av and 7 Av.
G train:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, free shuttle buses will replace G trains between Bedford Nostrand Avs and Court Sq due to proactive track maintenance and infrastructure repairs on the G line at Flushing Av and Nassau Av, and station improvements at Greenpoint Av, including the installation of three new elevators and other updates to make the station fully accessible. We are working hard to ensure that G service will be safe and reliable when more customers will be using the line and G stations as alternative service during the L train tunnel reconstruction. This weekend, G service will operate between Church Av and Bedford Nostrand Avs. Free shuttle buses will make all G line station stops between Bedford Nostrand Avs and Court Sq. Transfer between G trains and free shuttle buses at Bedford Nostrand Avs.
J train:
- At all times until Summer 2018, Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer-bound J trains skip 121st St. due to station rehabilitation work. For service to this station, take the J to Sutphin Blvd. and transfer to a Broad S.t-bound J. As a reminder, Broad St.-bound J trains skip 121st St. from 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. on weekdays; take the Z instead. For service from this station, take the J to 111st St. and transfer to a Jamaica Center-bound J.
- At all times until Jan. 2019, Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer-bound J trains skip 104 St due to station rehabilitation work. Use a Manhattan-bound J train to complete your trip. Transfer atSutphin Blvd, 111 St, or Woodhaven Blvd. As a reminder Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer-bound J trains also skip 121 St at all times until late Summer 2018 due to station rehabilitation work.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, free shuttle buses and/or 4/6/F trains replace J trains between Hewes St and Broad St due to structural steel improvements at Marcy Av. J service will operate between Jamaica Ctr and Hewes St. Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service between Hewes St and Delancey-Essex Sts. Transfer between trains and buses at Hewes St and/or Delancey-Essex Sts F line station. For service between Delancey-Essex Sts and Broad St, use 6 to/from nearby stations via transfer at Bleecker St/B’way Lafayette St. Transfer to/from the 4 at Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall. For service to/from Manhattan, use the A/C or L via transfer at Broadway Junction.
M train:
- Beginning 8:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, M service will end early between 71 Av and Myrtle Av due to track maintenance at W 4 St-Wash Sq.
- From 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, free shuttle buses and/or J trains replace M trains between Delancey-Essex Sts and Myrtle Av due to structural steel improvements at Marcy Av. M trains will operate between Metropolitan Av and Myrtle Av. For service between Delancey-Essex Sts and Hewes St, use free shuttle buses. For service between Hewes St and Myrtle Av, take the J. As a reminder, M service between 71 Av and Myrtle Av will end at 8:15 p.m. on Friday night.
N train:
- At all times until fall 2018, Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N trains skip Fort Hamilton Pkwy, New Utrecht Ave., 18th Av., 20th Ave., Kings Hwy, Avenue U and 86th St. due to station rehabilitation work at nine stations on the Sea Beach Line.
- For service from these stations, take a Manhattan-bound N to Bay Pkwy or 8th Ave. and transfer to a Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N.
- For New Utrecht Ave.-62 St., take the D. Transfer between N and D trains at 36th St. or Coney Island-Stillwell Ave.
- For service to these stations, take the Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N to Bay Pkwy or Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. and transfer to a Manhattan-bound N.
- At all times until February 2019, N trains will skip Broadway and 39th Ave. in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby open Astoria line stations at 30th Ave., 36th Ave., or Queensboro Plaza via the Q102 bus.
- At all times until July 2019, N trains will run local in both directions between 59 St and 36 St in Brooklyn due to structural rehabilitation work to repair and replace steel columns, lighting, ventilators, and deteriorated concrete, and perform water mitigation work to address water seepage in the express tunnel between the 59 St and 36 St stations. N trains will stop at 53 St and 45 St in both directions.
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, free shuttle buses replace N trains between Ditmars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza due to track replacement south of the 39 Av station. N service will operate between Queensboro Plaza and Coney Island-Stillwell Av. Free shuttle buses will make all N line station stops between Ditmars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza. Transfer between trains and buses at Queensboro Plaza. As a reminder, N trains skip Broadway and 39 Av in both directions until Feb. 2019 due to station renovations.
N/Q trains:
- From 11 p.m. Friday, Sept 7. to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, Manhattan-bound N/Q trains are rerouted via the R line (Lower Manhattan) from Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr to Canal St due to track replacement north of DeKalb Av station. Manhattan-bound N/Q trains will make station stops at DeKalb Av, Jay St-MetroTech, Court St, Whitehall St, Rector St, Cortlandt St, and City Hall. As a reminder, N trains will stop at 53 St and 45 St in both directions until July 2019 due to structural rehabilitation work in the tunnel.
N/R trains:
- From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, uptown N/R trains skip 49 St due to electrical improvements between Times Sq-42 St and 57 St-7 Av. As an alternative, use downtown N/Q local or R train to complete your trip. Transfer at 57 St-7 Av or Times Sq-42 St.
Q train:
- From 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday to Monday, Sept. 7 to Sept. 10, uptown Q trains skip 49 St due to electrical improvements between Times Sq-42 St and 57 St-7 Av. As an alternative, use downtown N or Q local train to complete your trip. Transfer at 57 St-7 Av or Times Sq-42 St.
