NEW YORK CITY — The perfect pumpkin could be more pricey trick than cheap treat this year near New York City.
Pumpkins could cost a frightening $5 apiece this Halloween season, if past years' price trends continue, numbers from the market research company Statista show.
Last year, pumpkins sold for an average of $4.83 apiece, up from $4.18 and $4.04 in the two years before that, according to Statista.

Those prices make 2018's average $3.89 pumpkin look like chump change.

Maybe. Pumpkin prices often change closer to Halloween, but there's one discouraging sign.
The average price per pound is $1.38 for consumers, according to the most recent statistics from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
That means a 10- or 14-pound pumpkin could cost from $14 to $20 apiece.
