NEW YORK CITY — New York City kids will get quite the treat this Halloween: nearly 100 car-free streets to roam in their costumes as they hunt for candy.

But as city officials Monday cut the ribbon on their "Trick-or-Streets" program in Queens, a rowdy crowd greeted them with a chorus of boos and shouts, according to posts from reporters at the event.

"City officials getting absolutely berated ...," tweeted Julianne Cuba, a reporter for Streetsblog, along with photos of locals and politicians facing off.

The reception was less than the "fa-boo-lous" affair promised by city Department of Transportation officials beforehand.

Still, the jeers are unlikely to halt the Open Streets program's Halloween expansion.

Officials plan to open the streets to kids, not cars, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the spooky holiday.
