NYC's Unemployment Rate Drops 1 Point In Past Month: State Data

"New York City isn't just coming back, it's back," Mayor Eric Adams said about the city's unemployment rate dropping to 5.6 percent.

NEW YORK CITY — New York City's unemployment rate fell a full percentage point in the past month, according to newly released jobs data.

The city's employment rate stood at 5.6 percent in September, the state's Department of Labor found Thursday.

In August, it stood at 6.6 percent, the data shows.

Mayor Eric Adams seized the opportunity to crow about the city's recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: New York City isn’t just coming back, it’s back," he said in a statement.

"We’re seeing the highest labor force participation in 12 years, with more New Yorkers reentering the workforce and more New Yorkers finding jobs."

The city added nearly 262,000 jobs in the past year, the data shows. That 6.1 percent change far outpaced job growth in all other parts of New York, according to the data.

And the city's unemployment drop outpaced a similar monthly dip seen statewide — the rate fell from 4.7 percent in August to 4.3 percent in September, the data shows.
