PHOTOS: NYC Stonewall Memorial Vandalized, Pride Decor Burned

Vandals snapped Pride flags and destroyed decorations at the national monument and at 22nd Street, Council Member Erik Bottcher said Friday.

NEW YORK CITY — The Stonewall National Monument in the West Village was vandalized last night, according to a New York City council member.

In a statement via X (formerly Twitter), Council member Erik Bottcher provided details on the incident:

"Last night, bigots vandalized the Stonewall National Monument, snapping flag sticks & stealing 3/4 of the flags around the perimeter of the park. Also, someone burned Pride decorations at 22nd St. in Chelsea."

Photos provided by Bottcher showed scattered and broken Pride decorations on the street near the park Friday morning.

"Anyone who thinks this will intimidate our community is badly mistaken," he added.

Patch has reached out to the NYPD for further information on this incident.

Similarly, the incident comes following the news of a new bill passed last week that will rename the Christopher Street-Sheridan Square subway station to honor the Stonewall National Monument.

The bill sponsored by Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal and Assembly Member Deborah Glick passed the New York State Senate last Wednesday.

The station will be renamed to “Christopher Street-Stonewall National Monument Station."

“This change will memorialize the history of the modern LGBTQ civil rights movement and inspire NY to demand justice and equality for all,” Hoylman-Sigal said in a tweet on X.

The Stonewall Inn, Christopher Park, and Christopher Street are part of the national monument and is the site of the 1969 Stonewall Riots.
