"How is this remotely ethical?" tweeted New York Rep. Ritchie Torres, arguing it interferes with the prosecution of Donald Trump.

Rep. Jim Jordan, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, will hold a "field hearing" April 17 at 9 a.m. in the Javits Federal Building focused on what a congressional notice calls Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's "pro-crime, anti-victim" policies.

The hearing dubbed "Victims of Violent Crime in Manhattan" drew a response from a spokesperson for Bragg that, with statistics, argued crime is down in the city.

"Don't be fooled, the House GOP is coming to the safest big city in America for a political stunt," the spokesperson said in a statement. "This hearing won't engage in actual efforts to increase public safety, such as supporting national gun legislation and shutting down the iron pipeline."

Jordan's plans also condemnation from the city's Democratic representatives, who argued Jordan is weaponizing Congress against Bragg's lawful investigation.

"He scheduled a hearing here in NYC in an attempt to intimidate the Manhattan DA and interfere with the prosecution of Donald Trump," tweeted Rep. Ritchie Torres.

Jordan, in his own tweet, argued that Bragg's "radical" policies led to an increase in violent crime in New York City.

Another Trump-aligned Republican lawmaker, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, similarly depicted New York City as a sort of lawless hellscape after she made a short visit to the city.

Such depictions are at odds with what many New Yorkers see in their own city and contradict recent NYPD statistics that show significant recent drops in murders and shootings.

Bragg's spokesperson said the New York City's murder rate is nearly three times lower than that in Columbus, Ohio, in Jordan's home state, citing statistics that appeared to be compiled by Wirepoints.

Democratic lawmakers argued that Jordan is effectively planning a Pro-Trump kangaroo court on the taxpayers' dime.

Rep. Daniel Goldman, who helped lead the first impeachment of Trump, decried reports that Trump is effectively using Jordan and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy as his "taxpayer-funded legal defense team to interfere in an ongoing criminal investigation."

"If true, this is a gross abuse of power and they must explain to the American people exactly what coordination exists," he tweeted.
