NEW YORK CITY — Shots fired in broad daylight near NYU's downtown Brooklyn campus Tuesday spurred a chilling piece of advice from the school security: Run, hide or fight.

NYU Campus Safety tweeted this message about 10:45 a.m. after shots rang out near 2 MetroTech Center near the Tandon School of Engineering, officials confirmed.

"If you are in the area: Run, Hide, or Fight," tweeted NYU Campus Safety. "Others stay away. Help is on the way."

No one was injured and a shelter-in-place alert was later repealed, said NYU spokesperson John Beckman.

"We have since heard from the Police Department that there is no ongoing threat," Beckman said in a statement. "We are advising our community of that update, and letting them know they can resume normal activity."

No arrests were made, and the incident remains under investigation, officials said.

The directive "run, hide, fight" comes directly from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which issued instructions on what to do when caught in a mass shooting in Sept. 2020

The FBI details why it works, and how, in a disturbing educational video that depicts a mass shooting inside a bar.

The guidelines urge Americans to hide when they can't run and fight when they can't hide.

"Fight only as a last resort," instructions read. "You're fighting for your life. Don't fight fair!"
