'Seas The Day,' 'Ocean Queen Rockstar' Among New NYC Ferry Names

The city again turned to kids to help pick names for new ferry boats.

NEW YORK, NY — New Yorkers will soon be able to "Seas the Day" on their morning commute. That's one of the names for 10 new NYC Ferry boats, all picked by second-graders at city schools, that the Economic Development Corporation unveiled Thursday.

The EDC turned to kids for a second time this year to name its latest fleet of ferries. Last year's ferry-naming competition turned out names like "Lunchbox," "McShiny" and "Friendship Express" that 13 NYC Ferry vessels currently bear.

Kids were no less creative with this year's names — the list includes "The Ocean Queen Rockstar," "Rainbow Cruise" and "Traversity." City officials revealed the new monikers at P.S. 148 in East Elmhurst, where second-graders recommended another winning name, "Spring Mallard."

"The kids who came up with the name Ocean Queen Rockstar are why I love this town so much," Alicia Glen, the deputy mayor for housing and economic development, said in a statement. "Every one of these NYC Ferry boat names have swagger and panache — and these students and their schools should be incredibly proud."

Some of the newly named boats will run on the new Soundview and Lower East Side ferry routes, which will start operating this summer, the EDC said.

After its launch last May, the NYC Ferry served nearly 3 million riders across four routes last year. The service plans to start running six high-capacity boats that can carry 349 people to accommodate increased demand, the EDC said.
