Second Asylum Seeker Dies By Suicide In NYC Shelter: Reports
A 26-year-old man from Venezuela was found in a Queens shelter's bathroom and later pronounced dead, according to reports.

NEW YORK CITY — The second asylum seeker died by suicide in a city-run shelter since New York City has seen an influx of migrants, according to reports.
A 26-year-old man from Venezuela was found inside a Queens shelter’s bathroom by his wife last week and later pronounced dead at a local hospital, the New York Post first reported.
A Department of Social Services spokesperson told Patch that state law prohibits release of specifics.

“This is an absolutely heart-breaking tragedy, and we are working closely with the family to support them during this incredibly difficult time,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
“These families are coming to New York City after a months-long harrowing journey, in some cases, still reeling from the trauma they experienced along the way. We recognize the very unique challenges asylum seekers are facing and we remain committed to continuing to build on our ongoing efforts and interagency coordination to connect these families and individuals to mental health supports as we help them stabilize their lives in a new country.”

The man is the second apparent suicide by an asylum seeker who entered the city after crossing the U.S. border amid turmoil in South American.
The first death was a young mother in September.
The most recent death comes amid Mayor Eric Adams raising concerns that the potential expiration of border policy could restart an unsustainable flow of asylum seekers heading into New York City. He said the city could have to reopen a controversial tent city on Randalls Island.
