NEW YORK CITY — Severe thunderstorms and rain will dampen the summer-like weather in New York City Friday, but only for a short period, as the area's next heat wave — with temperatures in the 90s — will take over through next week.

Thunderstorms and rain will move into the NYC area due to a cold front in the Northeast, according to AccuWeather.

"A cold front will tap into the warmer, more humid air and, when coupled with the storm, will make for a favorable environment for thunderstorms to develop in," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Joseph Bauer.
