Snow Advisory Issued, Forecasters Now Warn 5 Inches Could Hit NYC

NEW YORK — The snowstorm bound for New York could now drop as much as five inches of flakes on the five boroughs, the National Weather Service warns. The city will be under a winter weather advisory from 1 to 10 p.m., along with parts of New Jersey and Long Island.

The area could see anywhere from two to five inches of accumulation, with snow falling as fast as an inch per hour, the weather service says.

The storm is also expected to bring wind gusts as strong as 45 MPH, which could knock down tree branches, according to the weather service.

Thursday's wintry mix is also expected to include sleet and rain, with showers continuing into Friday morning, the weather service says.

Commuters should expect a slippery trip home on Thursday. Drivers should use "extreme caution" in tough road conditions, Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office said.

"Early winter weather is moving through the state this week and I urge New Yorkers to be prepared and to use caution when driving due to reduced visibility and possible black ice," Cuomo said in a statement.
