NEW YORK CITY— Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Tatiana Serafin who nominated her daughter Anna, Grade 10 of New York City.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Anna is in her 10th year of Girl Scouts and has devoted many hours of community service to her local community. She has planted trees with Greening Greenpoint, been on cleaning crews in Prospect Park, and sung Christmas carols at the senior center. In her most recent projects for the Girl Scout Leadership Institute for which she was selected have focused on food insecurity and food desserts in New York City. She has been volunteering at a food pantry and promoting urban farming. She also looks at the greater world and received her Silver Award by collecting 1000 books for African Library Project to support a local library in Malawi. When the war in Ukraine broke out, she and her cousin made bracelets and sold them to fundraise for the Ukrainian organization Razom.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Anna has a big heart and is always willing to help. She particularly loves to work with young children, to show them that they too can be stars.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Anna, Grade 10!
