These Are The Top Baby Names In New York City

Winning names include the title of a Jane Austen novel, a divine personification of the moon and a palindrome.

NEW YORK CITY — Emmas and Liams reign supreme among New York City babies.

The Health Department released Tuesday its list of the most popular baby names in New York City and, for the fifth year running Emma topped the girls names and Liam topped the boys.

“We are so pleased to welcome the Liams, Emmas, Olivias, Noahs and every other newborn, to our city and the world,” said Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan.

“The joy they bring will make for a happier 2023 and beyond.”

The city welcomed 99,262 little New Yorkers — 48,648 girls and 50,614 boys — among them 434 Emmas and 703 Liams, according to 2021 New York City birth certificate records.

Sarah and Chloe dropped off the girls names list to be replaced by Luna and Sofia, Olivia jumped two slots to claim second and Isabella fell, the ranking shows.

Benjamin replaced Alexander on the new list while Liam and Noah held firm onto their top tier spots.

The data also show the number of babies born in New York City dropped by 10 percent between from 110,443 in 2019 to 99,262 in 2021.

Manhattan welcomed the most new babies — 39,559 to be exact — Brooklyn came in second with 23,217, Queens third with 19,758, Bronx fourth with 11,198 and Staten Island last with 5,530 new Staten Islanders.
