NEW YORK CITY — WNYC has decided to take away "The Takeaway."

The mainstay news show — which has been aired from New York City's public radio station since 2008 — will wrap up this summer, host Melissa Harris-Perry announced Friday on Twitter.

"@WNYC execs dropped news of @TheTakeaway cancellation," Harris-Perry wrote. "They're not continuing the show past June."

WNYC leaders told Current that the audience for "The Takeaway" has been declining steadily and the their reasons were financial. According to a memo reported by Current, it “was not a decision made lightly."

"The Takeaway" is a daily show co-produced by WNYC broadcast to 241 public radio stations across the nation.

Like most New York newsrooms, it has its dedicated followers and a complicated history.

Harris-Perry took over for former host Tanzina Vega, who left amid "internal tensions" in 2021, the Daily Beast reported.

Vega took over in 2018 to succeed John Hockenberry, who was accused by several women of harassment at the height of the #MeToo era.

While Harris-Perry took umbrage with executives in her Friday announcement, she was effusive in praise for her colleagues.

"The producers, editors, directors and team of @TheTakeaway deserve SO MUCH BETTER than this," the host wrote. "I will stand for them until the end."

This story was updated Monday to reflect an WNYC spokesperson said "The Takeaway" is broadcast to 241 radio stations, not 300 as was stated on PRX's website.
