Lots of Fun In the Summertime

There's plenty to do in New City and beyond in July.

The kids are all home from school and if all you are hearing is "I'm bored. There's nothing to do" ... well, there is indeed lots happening in New City and beyond in Rockland County coming up in July to keep everyone busy and having fun.

Here's the latest update from the folks at Rockland County Tourism, who keep track of local events and spread the word about them to attract visitors to Rockland - and to show Rocklanders what's going on in their neighborhoods and nearby communities:

Palisades Indoor Farmers Market
Rockland's only winter indoor farmers' market will now continue thru the summer! The Palisades Farmers' Market is held every Saturday through November 30, from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the Palisades Community Center located at 675 Oak Tree Road in Palisades, NY. Housed in a charming schoolhouse built in 1870, shoppers will find along with seasonal fruits and vegetables, line-caught fish from the Hamptons, chicken, eggs and meat, Ronny Brook Farm Dairy milk, yogurt and butter; baked goods; pickles; goat, sheep and cow cheese; Balthazar breads and bakery items; jams, chutney, hot sauce and more.  Fair-trade coffee and tea by the bag or enjoy a cup of coffee or cappuccino and a market treat with friends at our cafe tables.   For further information visit www.Palisadesny.com or to join the mailing list for updates at PCC@palisadesny.com

Rockland Voices
This semi-permanent exhibition has been made possible by generous support from The Provident Bank Charitable Foundation. It relates early history through historic objects and documents. Stories of the people, buildings and sites are told using highlights from The Historical Society's varied collections. For example, through Teunis Smith's diary, the exhibition will look at observations from a farmer's diary in the lower Hudson --ordinary, extraordinary, and vivid details of farming as a way of life and the relationship farmers have to the landscape, weather, crop production and sales. With the help of documents from Elizabeth Van Houten's Sampler, the exhibition will explore childhood in that period of time and information about her and her family. Also on view is the extraordinary rooster weather vane that was at one time atop the Reformed Church in Tappan. Don't miss this wonderful walk through Rockland History.
Hours: Wednesday - Sunday 12 - 4pm.  Admission is free, donations greatly appreciated.

Women of Rockland
Opening Reception: Exhibition Runs: June 1 through July 31.

"Women of Rockland" Interactive Art Installation to be installed at the Palisades Center Mall.  A shopping trip to the Palisades Mall in West Nyack might not be the most likely place to see an art installation but, visitors will be in for a visual treat when Rockland artist Lisa Levart's newest photographic exhibition, Women of Rockland; Portraits of Sacred Myths, is suspended between three floors of a main Atrium from June 1 through July 31.  The installation, along with the womenofrockland.com website, is the first interactive installation that the Palisades Mall has had. The exhibition will have traveled the county from the Nyack Center, where it opened in April, to the Rockland County Day School, to its final destination at the Palisades Mall.  Women of Rockland features a series of large photographic fabric banners with images of five Rockland County women from diverse cultures that capture evocative contemporary interpretations of known and little known sacred myths from their individual and international cultures including a Jewish filmmaker, the founder of Mzuzu Academy, the first internationally accredited secondary school in the northern region of Malawi, a Chinese American visual artist, three young college students from the Sufi Mosque in Chestnut Ridge and a French Gypsy singer/songwriter. The photographic images will be accompanied by a written piece commenting on the ancient myth that each woman chose to embody and why that sacred story has meaning in their everyday lives.  Palisades Center |  | West Nyack, 845-353-4855 | www.palisadescenter.com

The opening reception for "Seeing Music" is July 8, 5:30pm-7:30pm at Blue Hill Plaza, 1 Blue Hil Plaza, Pearl River, NY. The exhibition seeing Music highlights the work of four distinctive American artists: Tom Artin (photography), Judith Peck (sculpture), John Laurenzi (painting), and Michael Singletary (painting). Each of these artists focuses on a moment of musical impact in Jazz performance, personal or community relationship, visual composition, or ordinary movement and meditation. Though diverse in experience and style, the artists are linked in this exploration into the language of Music, and the visible signs of its impact on individuals, relationships, visual compositions, and how people communicate through music.

Participants will come away with not only a great experience and a beautiful piece of work but also a deeper understanding of that artist and their significance. Instructor: Lauren Doner, a professional scenic painter who has worked on films such as I am Legend, Spiderman and Sherlock Holmes. Fee: $15 per session (HH members $13). 10% discount if you sign up for all four classes and pay in advance. Pre-registration required.
