Misaligned Third Rail Near New Hyde Park LIRR Station Causes Delays Monday

Problem causes delays on 70 trains during morning rush-hour commute Monday.

A misalignment in the third rail near the New Hyde Park train station was the cause of delay for dozens of morning rush-hour trains Monday morning according to Long Island Rail Road officials.

The problem, which caused delays on 70 trains, was repaired at about 7:20 a.m. but not before causing delays up and down the main line with residual delays of up to 30 minutes. THe railroad anticipates that there will not be an affect on the evening rush-hour.

The misalignment caused the cancelation of a 6:25 a.m. train from Hicksville to Penn Station – which officials said was canceled due to overcrowding – and a 7:28 a.m. train from Cold Spring Harbor to Penn Station.
