New Hyde Park High School Heroes

Thirty-three New Hyde Park Memorial High School students participated in the Junior Achievement High School Heroes Program on March 13. The High School Heroes program provides high school students the opportunity to become role models by teaching and inspiring elementary students.

The New Hyde Park Memorial High School Heroes worked in teams at Covert Avenue School teaching the kindergarten, first- and second-graders. As teachers for the day, they taught five interactive lessons with the themes “ourselves,” “our family” and “our community.”

Participants included freshmen Brian Florkowski, Valerie Hoffer and Norpreet Kaur; sophomores Zaire Brown, Danny Hehir, Tiara Hickmon, Manvir Kaur, Indira Kolenovic, Zahrah Mohamed, Roslyn Petrovich, Givanna Puran, Esmeralda Ramirez, Sophia Suarez and Brandon Wong; juniors Aarman Jivraj, Brianna Platia, and Amarilis Thompson; and seniors Aguilar Ashley, Barbara Baker, Nathalie Chirinos, Johenny Dominguez, Billy Gatzonis, Synthia Holmstock, Kezia Jacob, Jasleen Kaur, Hesham Khan, Nicole Klappas, Ashley Lasko, Alana Moran, Aliana Moreno, Giovanna Peralta, Veronica Solis and Cassandra Ward.

“This was my second time participating in Junior Achievement High School Heroes. I always knew that I wanted to be an elementary school teacher, but this experience solidifies my choice to study education and become a teacher,” Kaur said.

While many of the students are looking forward to volunteering again next year, the seniors are upset that this was their last experience. Academy of Finance Program Manager Christine Teetz extended her appreciation to Covert Avenue School and all the cooperating teachers and Junior Achievement representatives, especially, Robert Mugno and Tina Fiorentine. As with all Junior Achievement events, a great day was had by all.
