Accounting Is Third Fastest Growing Job In Hudson Valley

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Accounting and auditing were ranked No. 3 on the state Department of Labor's recently released list of the Hudson Valley's Top Five Trending Jobs for 2017, coming in not too far behind physical therapists at No. 1 and registered nurses at No. 2.
With an above-average wage of $77,940 and a high likelihood of continued growth in the Hudson Valley through the end of 2017, accountants and auditors were determined to be top trending job titles by labor market experts who analyzed survey data as well as the area’s projected needs.
Furthermore, nationwide, the demand for accountants and auditors will have increased by about 142,000 jobs, or 11 percent, between 2014 and 2024, according to Accounting Degree Today, an online information guide for potential accounting students.

On its website, Marist College's School of Management says that modern society requires more of accountants now than ever before, as today's accounting students and professionals "are expected not only to provide auditing, accounting, and tax services for small and large companies, but also to provide services in forecasting, financial planning and evaluation, and the creation and monitoring of new technologies."

An aspiring accountant or auditor is generally expected to hold a bachelor's degree in accounting, according to Accounting Degree Today. Additionally, some accounting and auditing professionals choose to go on to earn their Master in Business Administration degrees. Once academic requirements are achieved, most accounting students then begin working toward becoming Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), which is "the most sought after (certification) in terms of employment," the website noted.
Beyond becoming a CPA, accountants and auditors can also pursue a wide range of other certifications, from Certified Internal Auditor, to Accredited Tax Preparer, to Certified Payroll Professional, among several other possibilities.
