Investigators Believe Blaze That Killed Dad, 2 Sons Was Accidental

Officials have now released the identities of the 12-year-old and 17-year-old who perished in the Goshen house fire.

GOSHEN, NY— Authorities have released new details about the tragic fire that took the lives of a Hudson Valley father and his two children.

On Sunday, shortly after 8 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a reported structure fire at a multi-family residence. The initial investigation revealed that the upstairs neighbor first noticed smoke coming from a pipe behind the kitchen stove. She immediately evacuated the residence with her two children and contacted 911.

Before escaping, the neighbor saw her downstairs neighbor, identified as 50-year-old Shane Munn, using a weed trimmer in the yard. Moments later, Shane was seen running back into the residence and did not return.

Several local fire departments responded to the scene and started search and rescue efforts. Firefighters found Shane dead in the living room of the downstairs apartment.

Munn's two children, now identified as 17-year-old Ryan H. Munn, and 12-year-old Travis A. Munn, were found unresponsive in a bedroom. Life-saving efforts were initiated on the scene by members of the Town of Goshen Police Department and EMS.

Both children were taken to Garnet Health Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill, where both brothers succumbed to their injuries.

The preliminary investigation has determined that the cause of the fire was accidental in nature, according to authorities.
