2010 Census Data: Population Rises in Southold Town; Peconic and Fishers Island Lose Residents
Southold Town's population rises over the past 10 years, and all hamlets within the town gain residents except Fishers Island and Peconic, says U.S. Census.
Populations of , and have all increased since 2000, with the hamlets of Greenport West (parts of Greenport outside of the incorporated village), East Marion and Cutchogue gaining the most residents and Peconic losing the most, according to U.S. Census data released late last month.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Greenport West had a population of 1,679 in 2000, which jumped to 2,124 in 2010 — a 26.5 percent increase — and East Marion's population rose by 22.5 percent over the past decade from 756 to 926 residents.
Cutchogue experienced a 17.6 percent jump in population from 2,849 in 2000 to 3349 in 2010 — the third-highest population growth out of any hamlet in Southold Town.

The population increases over the decade in both Southold Town, up 6.6 percent, and Shelter Island, up 7.4 percent, trend lower than national but higher than state and county averages. The U.S. population increased by 9.7 percent, New York State grew by 2 percent and Suffolk County’s population grew by 5 percent since 2000.
Mattituck experienced the least growth in Southold Town over the decade, with 4,198 residents in 2000 up to 4,219 in 2010, according to the census numbers.

Peconic lost 398 people since 2000 while Fishers Island lost 53 people over the decade, bringing the year-round population from 289 to 236.
