Peconic Native Edna Phelps Dies at Age 102

Edna Phelps, a Calverton resident and Peconic native, died at home on Sunday surrounded by family. She was 102 years old.

Phelps lived with her daughter, Sandi Mulvaney, and her family. She is survived by Mulvaney and her son, Robert Carlough, of Blue Point, as well as three grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

She invited Riverhead Patch to visit her a couple of times, and noted during one sitting that one secret to her longevity was, "Staying sober. Don't drink. Don't smoke. Also, work every day. Maybe that's better. Then you get into no trouble."

Phelps grew up in Peconic, and worked on farms with the Wells family, the Case family, and in the Riverhead school system, working in the kitchen. She lived in Blue Point for several years before buying a home on North Howell Avenue.

Visitation services for Phelps will be held on Tuesday from 2-4, and 7-9 p.m. at McLaughlin-Heppner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at McLaughlin-Heppner Wednesday morning at 10 a.m., followed by internment at Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn.
