Baymen: Delayed Scallop Season is ‘Hit or Miss’ So Far
The Suffolk Times reports that despite a late start to the season, baymen are harvesting a decent crop of Peconic Bay scallops this year.
With Hurricane Sandy wreaking havoc on everyone and everything, opening day of Peconic Bay scallop season was pushed back over a week this year, but local baymen have hustled to harvest the delectable shellfish from local waters, according to a report from the Suffolk Times this week.
The quality of this year’s harvest was in question even before the hurricane hit, with an earlier study released saying that many of the scallops had died off. But baymen like Southold Fish Market owner Charlie Manwaring said he’s been pulling plenty of living scallops out of certain areas of the bay.
