NORTH FORK, NY — A homeless dog has flown for almost 8,000 miles to the North Fork, to find her forever family.

Gabrielle Stroup, director of operations at the North Fork Welfare League, said she was notified about Bea by Jeanine Fitzgerald-Rogg, a volunteer.

Fitzgerald-Rogg said Bea flew in from a "high-kill, dirt poor shelter in Guam" on August 26 and needs a new home.

"She is kid, cat and dog friendly, fully vetted," she said. "Polite. Her adopter fell through, and she has no chance without a commitment here."

Stroup said someone had already paid to sponsor Bea's trip from Guam. "This was her chance to get out. So my wonderful volunteer Jeanine reached out to me and asked if we could take her."

According to the League, "Bea traveled from (Mariana Islands), Saipan to Guam, Guam to Tokyo, Tokyo to Vancouver, Vancouver to Seattle, Seattle to New Jersey. The rescuer then transported Bea from the airport to the North Fork. In between flights, volunteers welcomed Bea into their home so she could rest, eat, be bathed, and find some much-needed TLC," volunteers wrote.

"Bea is an absolute dream of a dog. Bea is anything but 'plain'. She is a loving, gentle soul, and is more than deserving of a good home. Please continue our mission of saving Bea."

Beae is estimated to be about 2 years old. Bea is spayed, up to date on vaccines and heartworm positive; she has been on the slow-kill method since February. She will be a foster at first until she is heartworm negative.

The League said they will cover all medical costs as well as heartworm preventative until she is heartworm negative.

Bea was helped on her journey by the Saipan Humane Society and has lived in foster care with both cats and dogs, Stroup said.

If you would like to meet Bea, call 631-765-1811. She is currently at The League's Peconic location at 269 Peconic Lane.
