UPDATE: Garden City Man Charged With DWI After SUV Rolls in Greenport
Southold Town Police charge Garden City man with driving while intoxicated while he is hospitalized after car accident.

Michael Gambardella, 18, of Garden City was charged with driving while intoxicated after an early morning New Year's day car accident in Greenport.
Gambardella was driving a Honda CR-V SUV on Front Street around 8 a.m. when he hit a tree and a sign post and rolled the vehicle onto the front yard of a house located next to the Hotel, police said. Gambardella told police he had fallen asleep and was taken by members to for a check up. After investigation, Gambardella, who was not injured, was found to be intoxicated and was arrested and released on his own recognizance after his arraignment that afternoon.

Gambardella was driving alone but hit what appeared to be a large cement cornerstone of the front porch of the house when the SUV overturned, according to Greenport Fire Chief Kenny White.
"A large cement block had smashed through the passenger side window, so if there was a passenger it would have been pretty bad," Chief White said.

Fire department members were at the scene for about an hour New Year's morning.
